Description

Contract Hours: 22.5 hours (3 days) per week

Salary: £18,000

Contract Type: Permanent

The Bristol Zoological Society is a conservation charity that works in 10 countries around the world and runs two zoos and several Higher Education programmes in partnership with university/college institutions.

We are looking for a dynamic and experienced individual to join our team with broad academic knowledge, experience and/or understanding of applied field conservation and conservation science research in freshwater habitats. Experience in the application of relevant research methods for fish conservation science projects is required. We are particularly interested in applicants with demonstrable experience in applied conservation measures, rather than strictly fundamental research. If you have experience in any one of these areas, we would be very interested in hearing from you. Your role will be crucial in helping us complete our mission of saving wildlife together and deliver excellent Higher Education programmes.

Main Responsibilities

Lead/Co-lead Bristol Zoological Society’s Conservation Projects on Freshwater Fish, including projects within our FishNet Greece and Madagascar Conservation Programme, as well as in our UK Conservation Programme.

HE Teaching and Supervision: the successful applicant will lead year-long modules (undergraduate and/or masters level) and supervise and mark research projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

There may be occasions when the post holder is requested to work in other Society locations, or carry out other duties considered reasonable by the Society or its representatives.

Please review the Job Description/Person Specification at www.bristolzoo.org.uk/lecturer-conservation-project-manager for more information.

Benefits of working for Bristol Zoological Society

  • You will have a hybrid role both in academia (like in a university) and in applied conservation (like in a conservation NGO), with teaching and supervision of undergraduate and post-graduate students, as well implementing actions on the ground in our zoos or in our conservation projects around the world to make a real difference for wildlife and people.
  • The main aim of your project work is real-world impact in conservation; thus, you will be implementing solutions to conservation issues critical to freshwater habitats and assessing the impact of those solutions.
  • You will be working for one of the UK’s leading zoo and conservation charities, and joining an established conservation project.
  • You will join a team with a diverse set of skills and work collaboratively across the department and the Society as a whole, including the animal and vet departments, where possible.
  • You may be supported to participate in relevant conferences, working groups, committees etc. as most relevant to your role in the Society and the conservation project to which you are assigned (at the discretion of the Head of Department and in line with the approved budget).
  • You will have the name and reputation of Bristol Zoological Society behind you when applying for relevant funding for the Conservation Projects.
  • You will be joining a zoological society and conservation charity with a new vision, to become an example of a modern zoo with conservation and sustainability at its heart.

Please apply through the Bristol Zoo website at www.bristolzoo.org.uk/lecturer-conservation-project-manager by submitting your CV, including a list of your relevant experience, education and relevant publications (peer-reviewed/grey literature/technical reports/action plans etc.), and cover letter clearly indicating how you meet the required characteristics of the Person Specification. The cover letter can be written into the Other Information section of the BZS application form which also must be completed.

We recognise the value that diversity adds to our work and organisation. We welcome applications from all sections of the community, as we value having a diverse pool of applicants to find the best person for the role.

Closing date is 21st October 2021 at 12 noon (UK).
