Description  

The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) was launched on 1 October 2014. It merges the former Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency (AHVLA) with parts of the Food and Environment Research Agency (FERA) responsible for plant and bee health to create a single agency responsible for animal, plant and bee health. We work to safeguard animal and plant health for the benefit of people, the environment and the economy.

An enthusiastic Wildlife Biologist is required to provide evidence-based support and advice to wildlife management policy customers in Defra and elsewhere through provision of expertise in wildlife biology, project leadership and science delivery in order to devise sustainable, humane and efficient wildlife management strategies.

The preferred candidate must hold a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in biology/ecology/zoology or similar or equivalent experience and ideally also have  a postgraduate qualification (MSc, MRes, MPhil, PhD) in ecology or similar. They must also have sound knowledge of wildlife ecology and management and experience of managing scientific studies, including planning, data collection, analysis and interpretation as well as high standards of report writing and ability to produce papers suitable for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
