Field Studies Council is one of the UK’s leading providers of outdoor environmental education. This is an exciting opportunity to join the Field Studies Council (FSC).

We are now looking for a number of enthusiastic Tutors, with experience of teaching in the great outdoors, to lead and engage groups of all abilities.

We have the following roles available:

Cumbria - Castle Head, Grange-over-Sands

FSC Castle Head is located in south Cumbria between the coast of Morecambe Bay and the Lake District National Park. The Centre is easily accessible by both road and rail, being only 20 minutes from junction 36 off the M6 and an hour and a half drive from both Manchester and Liverpool. The closest train station at Grange-over-Sands is only 5 minutes’ drive from the Centre.

With easy access to both the coastline of Morecambe Bay, the glaciated uplands of the southern Lake District and the lakes of Windermere and Coniston, Castle Head is ideally situated for a wide range of both field studies and adventurous activities.

Settle - Malham Tarn, North Yorkshire

FSC Malham Tarn is based around a Georgian fishing lodge situated on the northern shore of Malham Tarn and is surrounded by the 147-hectare Malham Tarn National Nature reserve, which along with the Centre buildings is owned and managed by the National Trust. The Centre itself has accommodation for 105 residents in rooms across three buildings, two thirds of which are en-suite, including one accessible bedroom.

We are also looking for a Peripatetic Tutor to work across all our North centres including Keswick, Cumbria, Malham - Skipton and Isle of Cumbrae North Ayrshire. This is a permanent role.

The role

Our Tutors will develop, plan and deliver ‘out-of-classroom learning’ activities and engage students to achieve our goal of ‘Bringing Environmental Understanding to All through first-hand experience’.

This is essentially an active role and will require the post-holder to teach students from KS2-KS5 as well as family/adult groups. Taught sessions predominantly include primary field studies, secondary geography/ecology investigations as well as bushcraft and adventure activities.’

You will also be able to carry out duties associated with effectively managing groups in an outdoor learning location, whilst ensuring the health and safety of the group at all times, including carrying safety sacks.

About you

With previous teaching / tutoring experience the successful candidate will be educated to degree level or equivalent in Science, Geography, Environmental Studies, Maths or a closely allied discipline. You will be experienced in producing and preparing teaching resources and who can use interactive whiteboards, GiS, presentation software and spreadsheets.
