Turtle Biologist Position
We are seeking a motivated out going marine biologist to oversee all aspects of Seamarcs' Maldivian Sea Turtle Project and its research programs, starting on the 1st September 2014.
The role involves:
- Manage and maintain all aspects of the Maldivian Sea Turtle Monitoring Program;
- Manage sea turtle photo identification program;
- Travel to other islands and conduct community and outreach programs;
- Communication of work to guests and journalists;
- Regular written reports (in English) concerning all activities and targets;
- Management of turtle conservation assistants;
The successful candidate will have:
- Experience in marine conservation and research, with specific experience in turtle ecology;
- Knowledge and experience of sea turtle nesting, husbandry and rehabilitation;
- Experience of project management and staff supervision;
- A qualified diver, divemaster prefered.
- Willingness to travel;
- Experience in awareness and education programs;
- Academic qualifications in a relevant discipline (Marine Biology, Environmental Science …);
- MSc / PhD preferred.

Job Description
As the Turtle Biologist, your scope of work will include:
- Be responsible for the turtle related projects at the Four Seasons resorts. These include:
- Rehabilitation project at Landaa Giraavaru
- Head start program at Kuda Huraa
- Write monthly progress reports for submission to the MDC manager
- Running the Nest Protection Program
- Organise visits to atolls and islands throughout the Maldives.
- Conduct community assessments
- Form partnerships with local stakeholders
- Conduct awareness presentations and information dissemination events
- Conduct beach walks, monitoring of nesting behavior and egg relocation if and when appropriate.
- Head start program at Kuda Huraa
- Maintain and develop the head start program, ensuring the continuation of turtles through the program
- Communicating with other stake holders to take turtles
- Conduct presentation and information dissemination events
- Manage feeding and health of animals within the program
- Maintain databases and data collection
- Rehabilitation program at Landaa Giraavaru
- Maintain and develop the rehabilitation program
- Communicate with local partners
- Maintain databases and data collection
- Manage and maintain turtle health while present within the program
- Turtle ID program
- Manage Turtle Biologist assistants
- Process all photographs submitted to the ID program
- Communicate with network of photo ID contributors
- Write monthly project update
- Maintain databases and data collection
- Manage the Turtle Monitoring Dive, (must be a qualified diver, dive master preferred).
- Conducting guided snorkeling trips and diving trips for guests
- Conducting marine life briefing and debriefing with divers and snorkelers
- Carry out marine life presentations and updating them based on researched information
- Participate in the training, teaching and organization of tests of marine biology course to Dive Master and MDC apprentices
- Other research programs may be added to your work program in time
- Additional activities may be added in time to suit overall resort’s objectives
You will be expected to follow the Four Seasons Service and Culture Standards at all times, a copy of which will be provided on your first day at work.
Working with Four Seasons
- As the position is within Four Seasons, employees are required to follow the Four Seasons Service and Culture Standards at all times, a copy of which will be provided upon selection for the position but prior to your acceptance.
- Participate in any Four Season resort staff training sessions as required.
- Ensure that guests are greeted by staff on arrival, guiding them around the MDC and explaining the various programs currently being conducted.
- Attend the Managers 'Cocktails Event when invited to meet guests of the resort.
- Explain and promote the projects carried out by Seamarc and Four Seasons to any visitors to the MDC.
Additional projects and responsibilities may be added in time.
Salary and benefits
- The salary for this position is $1000 USD per month plus commission.
- Return flights from the applicant’s point of relocation.
- 34 days annual leave, 10 days paid sick leave, 10 days bereavement leave and one day off per week.
