About the Organization

The Institute for Industrial Productivity (IIP) is a global non-profit organization whose mission is to help decision-makers in government and industry develop and implement policies and corporate practices that will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve economic efficiency in the industrial sector. IIP’s work focuses primarily on energy-intensive industries (e.g., cement, iron & steel, chemicals, petroleum refining, and pulp & paper), as well as on policies that influence the energy intensity of "cross-cutting" equipment used in all industries. IIP serves as a hub for information on global best practices, as well as a source for direct assistance in key countries, borrowing the best examples of successful policy application from around the world. IIP is the principal voice on industrial efficiency for the ClimateWorks Network, a global group of organizations (Best Practice Networks and Regional Climate Foundations) that work in the nations and economic sectors with the highest potential for low-carbon, economic growth. A dynamic and highly strategic organization, IIP has brought on high-caliber staff for offices in Beijing, Paris, New Delhi, and Washington, DC, supported by a Board of Directors and a Strategic Advisory Group.

Technical Officer

IIP seeks a committed and energetic professional to support its technology and technical research agenda. The Technical Officer will support IIP’s global and in-country projects and strategies that promote industrial efficiency. A key resource to the IIP team, the Technical Officer will interact with technical experts in the field, collect, author and disseminate best practice information, assist with international contracting, manage projects, and assist with training activities. The Technical Officer will be evaluated on the effectiveness of information collection and production, its accessibility to IIP’s target audience, tool development and dissemination, teamwork and collaboration, and ongoing support to IIP projects and programs. All activities will contribute to reductions in GHG emissions from industrial sources, which will be the ultimate benchmark of the effectiveness of IIP and its staff. In addition to supporting IIP’s technical agenda, the Technical Officer will assist IIP in building a community of practice involving various stakeholders from government, industry, trade associations, NGOs, think-tanks, and academia.

The Technical Officer will report to IIP’s Policy and Programs Director and will be responsible for the day-to-day project management of IIP’s technical agenda. This is an ideal opportunity for a mid-career professional with interest and experience in industrial energy efficiency, looking to grow with an organization and work on a global level.

Primary Responsibilities

The Technical Officer will perform the following and other duties as assigned:

Draft terms of reference for technical studies, coordinate the assessment of proposals, and oversee project implementation and completion.
Help provide in-house technical review of reports and other deliverables to ensure that high quality, analytically rigorous technical work products emerge from IIP’s in-country work.
Participate in and provide timely technical assistance to IIP’s ongoing (pilot) projects in China, India, and the U.S.
Develop and prepare materials for a comprehensive Industrial Efficiency Technical Resource Library (e.g., lists of experts, existing benchmarking of energy efficiency, reports on technical best practices and technology guidebooks by sector or cross cutting end uses).
Identify gaps in existing resources and help manage and pilot research on global best practices.
Assist in the development of tools to make information accessible to IIP’s target audiences, as well as an outreach program to disseminate IIP’s research and tools.
Provide technical input for the development of GHG mitigation measurement, including estimation and attribution of GHG emissions related to IIP’s projects.
Effectively represent IIP in different fora and communicate its best practice information at expert conferences.
Establish and strengthen channels of communication and influence by building effective working relations with international experts, professionals, and policy-makers in IIP’s target regions.
Regularly communicate strategies, progress, and issues to others at IIP and in the international network, including other ClimateWorks Best Practice Networks and Regional Climate Foundations.
Professional Qualifications

The successful applicant will be committed to outstanding team performance and have the following minimum qualifications:

Master’s degree in engineering or equivalent professional degree.
At least two to five years of experience in industrial energy analysis and technology assessment, preferably across sectors such as chemicals and petrochemicals, iron and steel, cement, paper, aluminum, etc., or in an energy service company.
Technical background in energy efficiency including energy audits, benchmarks, and best practices.
Strong intellect, creativity, flexibility, drive, and entrepreneurial capabilities.
Professionalism, poise, and the ability to work as part of a team, maintain a sense of humor, and interact with a diverse array of people and cultures.
Willingness to engage in and comfort with domestic and international travel as needed.
Fluency in English required, multilingual candidates preferred.
Compensation and Benefits

IIP offers an excellent benefits package and a competitive salary that is commensurate with experience. The position will be located in Paris, France, with significant opportunity for international travel.
