About Us

The Environment Agency uses a natural capital approach to deliver more benefits for people and nature – creating climate resilient places, thriving wildlife, improving people’s health & wellbeing, and supporting a sustainable and resilient economy. Taking a natural capital approach is at the heart of the Government’s 25 Year Environment Plan, and our own corporate strategy sets ambitious targets and outcomes that a natural capital approach will help us deliver and report on.

These exciting opportunities will help develop evidence and tools supporting a natural capital approach in the Environment Agency, ensuring nature’s contributions to people and the economy are recognised and valued, helping to reverse the decline in nature and tackle the climate and biodiversity emergencies.

Your role with us

You will join the Natural Capital Team, based in the Chief Scientist’s Group, which co-ordinates and leads the Environment Agency's work on natural capital. We develop and embed natural capital evidence and tools into operational delivery and build staff capability and confidence to take a natural capital approach.

As a dynamic, collaborative and organised team player you will:

  • Shape and deliver evidence, tools, and capability resources to develop our understanding and ability to adopt a natural capital approach.
  • Provide specialist guidance and advice to support teams trialling natural capital tools.
  • Share your knowledge to advocate for the use of natural capital tools and evidence across the Environment Agency.

About You

We are looking for team players who can work at pace and have the curiosity to learn and respond to what our partners need from this innovative approach to environmental management.

Desirable experience and skills:

  • Understanding of natural capital and its application to shape policy or environmental management (or the desire to develop it).
  • Strong background in an environmental science e.g., freshwater, terrestrial or marine ecosystems, water quality, water resources, geomorphology, environmental socioeconomics.
  • Knowledge of Environment Agency and our partners e.g., land managers, water industry, spatial planners, developers.
  • Organised and flexible, with good planning and project management skills.
  • The ability to understand complex scientific information and use it to inform organisational approaches.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Inclusive, valuing diversity in its broadest sense.

The Natural Capital team is friendly, collaborative and supportive.  We promote an inclusive culture and welcome applications from diverse backgrounds.
