Description

World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the world’s leading conservation organization, seeks a Sustainable Landscapes Team Leader candidate for an anticipated large USAID funded Forests and Deltas Program in Vietnam. This project will provide technical support to accelerate Vietnam’s transition to climate resilient, low emissions development through investments in reducing net emissions from forests, and enhancing resiliency of people, places, and livelihoods in the delta regions to short and long-term climate impacts.

The program will primarily invest in provincial and district level demonstration and capacity building, and share lessons learned to inform national policies and implementation. In addition to Government of Vietnam partners, the program seeks to enhance the capacities of Vietnamese NGOs to be active partners with USAID. Successful programs will implement proactive transition support toward increasing responsibilities of, and handover to, Vietnamese partner organizations.

The Forests and Deltas program will address both forest-related emissions and delta adaptation and disaster risk reduction because they share a common focus on improved land and water management. Success of this program will be judged by the extent to which emission reductions and increased climate change resiliency are achieved within the project time period, state-of-the-art capacities are transferred to Vietnamese counterparts, and policies and practices are put in place that will facilitate a long-term path toward climate resiliency and low emissions development.

Key Program Goals:

  • Demonstrate near-term reductions in net emissions from forests;
  • Reduce risks associated with both near-term and long-term climate change impacts;
  • Enhance capacity of stakeholders and institutions to make systemic changes that accelerate the transition to more resilient, low emission development;
  • Achieve the above three results in ways that are economically, socially, and institutionally sustainable.

Major Duties & Responsibilities: The Sustainable Landscapes Team Leader will be responsible for:

  1. Leading implementation of activities that support adoption of land use practices that slow, stop and reverse emissions from deforestations and degradation of forests and other landscapes
  2. Providing staff oversight and technical direction
  3. Serving as a liaison to the government of Vietnam

Minimum Requirements

  1. A minimum of 10 years professional experience in managing international development activities in the forest or land use sector.
  2. Master’s level degree in international development, forestry, natural resource economics or social sciences, or other related field.
  3. Extensive senior level professional program management experience in the areas of policy reform, government engagement, and technical analyses.
  4. Proven high level of expertise in forestry, natural resources, natural resource economics or social science, climate change mitigation, or other work areas related to adopting land use practices that slow, stop and reverse emissions from deforestation and degradation of forests and other landscapes.
  5. Strong interpersonal and communication skills in English, sound project management experience, and experience working with government institutions, NGOs, private sector, and local communities.
