Description

SPOTT Project Manager (Full-Time / 1 Year Fixed-Term Contract)

Overview:

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation. ZSL’s mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. This is realised by carrying out field conservation and research in over 50 countries across the globe and through education and awareness-raising at our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, inspiring people to take conservation action.

ZSL recognises the significant threat posed by irresponsible and unsustainable business practice to global biodiversity and the landscapes in which we work. The Business and Biodiversity programme works to address these threats and to deliver a ZSL mission target to ensure best practice is business-as-usual in at least 1 million km2 of priority production landscape. SPOTT is ZSL’s flagship initiative to deliver this, addressing the lack of corporate transparency and accountability in commodity sectors that hinders progress towards sustainability. Central to SPOTT is an online platform providing a scorecard and assessments of companies on disclosure of operations and commitments and progress towards environmental and social best practice. This enables the financial sector and supply chain stakeholders to meet their own sustainability and ESG commitments and to support sustainable production through informed decision-making and company engagement. SPOTT focuses on high biodiversity impact sectors and is expanding from the original palm oil toolkit to cover timber and pulp (2017), and other commodities, such as rubber, extractives and seafood.

Role Profile:

ZSL is seeking a forward-thinking and experienced individual to manage SPOTT – a flagship initiative of ZSL’s Business and Biodiversity programme. Following the successful development and application of the model for the palm oil sector, the initiative is currently expanding in to other commodities, with the platform transitioning to a multi-commodity interface. A leader with strong management skills is needed to oversee the expansion and ensure increased impact with target user groups, taking on responsibility for the SPOTT strategy and its linkages to ZSL’s mission and global and regional conservation programmes. This position includes oversight of project delivery, funding, and partner and donor relations. The individual must be a good team player and manager, with responsibility for the SPOTT team based in London, including the Impacts, Website and Research teams. They will work closely with the Business and Biodiversity Programme Manager and other ZSL staff as necessary to resource the expansion of SPOTT to additional commodity sectors.

Person Specification:

  • Extensive experience in project management and delivery –to include associated budget management, staff management and stakeholder relations.
  • Prior experience working on business and biodiversity conservation issues, with a focus on high biodiversity impact sectors, commodity supply chains, and corporate transparency.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with teams, with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • A degree in a relevant subject or equivalent level of work experience in a relevant field.
