We are striving to become the best at what we do and are looking to invest in proactive, pragmatic and committed Ecologists to help us reach that goal. With support from an experienced UK team of Ecologists, we are looking for a Senior or Principal Ecologist to be based in our Bristol office and to work throughout the south-west with demonstrable project management experience. This is a key position within the National Ecology team - we are seeking a strong individual who can help the established team develop the ecological business in the south-west region and manage large and exciting projects in a range of sectors including residential, retail, defence and energy. You will serve a diverse client base, attend project meetings and public consultations, and engage with stakeholders including Natural England and the local authorities. As well as receiving support and training to continue your professional development, you will also mentor and advise other members of the team. The key elements of the role include the application of ecological principles to a range of projects, an in-depth knowledge of wildlife law, and the ability to identify pragmatic and client-focussed solutions to ecological constraints.

Your Role

The role will involve an extensive amount of field work, with a busy and changing survey schedule and office based work including day to day project management and client care including fee proposals and attendance at meetings. It will require the provision of support to team leaders, supervision of junior staff and liaison with a range of technical and non-technical bodies including other teams within WYG. Applicants with Natural England or NRW survey licences (e.g. bats and great crested newt in particular) and/o ornithological skills are highly desirable. Experience in mitigation and development licensing are also an advantage.

Sitting within an established team in Bristol, the successful applicant will also work closely with the south west team, including ecologists in Southampton, Cardiff and Wellington, and the wider national team. You will have a proven track record in project management, field work and technical reporting with a desire to mentor other staff and improve knowledge of their chosen field across the national team. With an ambition for continued growth for the ecology business, there is room for the right candidate to progress.

We operate as one national team and support each other through mentoring, internal and external training, team Away Days, and shadowing on projects. We promote internal progression and provide managerial as well as technical training to allow each ecologist to develop along a personalised career path.

  • Reporting to the Associate Ecologist in Cardiff.
  • To become an integrated member of the Bristol, south-west and UK ecology teams.
  • Effective management of and responsibility for ecology projects including input to fee proposals, technical report writing, tracking of project costs and providing support to junior team members including guidance, reviewing and training.
  • Clear written and verbal communication with clients and other stakeholders.
  • Completion of ecology surveys and proactive interpretation.

About You

It is essential that you are a proactive client manager, have written and verbal communication skills and the energy to get involved with the exciting projects delivered throughout our south-west region.  You will be able to work independently as well as within a team and must be able to communicate on appropriate technical and commercial levels internally and to a diverse range of current and potential clients. An eye for detail is imperative as you will be writing and reviewing reports efficiently and to a high standard. A relevant degree as a minimum is required plus good ICT skills including MS Word and Excel. You must have good knowledge of relevant UK and European legislation, policy and guidance. A membership of an appropriate professional body (e.g. CIEEM) or ability to apply is required as is a full UK driving licence.
