This role is based in the innovative, fast-paced Communications Group. IIED's 2014-2019 strategy sets out IIED's primary research agendas. We must communicate for impact around these strategic objectives.

We are committed to becoming a leading institution in sustainable development communications, complementing our leading role in research. Our communications work is based on four values – engagement, influence, accessibility and visibility – and targets five priority audiences: policy, media, academia and research, private sector and philanthropists, and the informed general public.

The post holder will focus on developing IIED's capacity to work with the mainstream and specialist media to influence audiences nationally and internationally – through direct coverage and by cultivating strong relationships with a range of media contacts to extend our sphere of influence – and strengthen IIED's positioning in the international sustainable development, climate, environment and social justice sectors.

To succeed in this role you will have a first degree in a relevant discipline as well as substantial relevant work experience in a media environment, including print, broadcast and digital media. You will be able to write well across a range of media channels – press releases, features, blogs, and so on, and have direct experience of print and public relations media strategy and methodologies.

You will have a track record of networking with media contacts, and experience of providing advice on press and media issues, as well as supporting and inputting to speech preparation for senior figures.
