On 01 November 2018, it was announced by the government that the five councils in Buckinghamshire will become a single unitary authority in April 2020.  Any changes made to the structure of local authorities in the county may affect council employees in the future. Therefore, the five councils have agreed to restrict applications to this position to current employees of the five councils for a period of 14 days from 5th September to 19th September. About the role

Are you keen to be involved with delivering flood management projects on the ground and helping communities to manage their flood risk? Then this role could be for you.

We have an exciting opportunity for some who is keen to develop in the area of Flood Management and who wants to be involved in a proactive and exciting part of the Council to deliver the strategic duties for Flood Management, be involved in commenting on and influencing large infrastructure projects such as HS2, East West Rail and Oxford Cambridge Expressway.

There will also be some opportunity to be involved in innovative projects involving catchment management, natural flood management, temporary defences, developing methods for groundwater management and community resilience.  There will be a requirement to work in a team of ten who are delivering statutory responsibilities of managing local flood risk in BCC’s role as Lead Local Flood Authority.

About you

You’ll have a key role supporting the Strategic Flood Management Team to deliver some of the statutory responsibility to manage local flood risk.  This work will be delivered through updating and using our asset register, using our consents and enforcement powers, working with others working with others in BCC on large infrastructure projects, working with communities and and other Risk Management Partners.

Ideally you will have experience in the Flood Management area or relevant associated areas such as project management or community resilience roles but key will be your enthusiasm and commitment to working in partnership with BCC, partners and with communities.  We would expect that you would have a relevant degree in Geography, Environmental Science or Engineering or equivalent experience.  Through your studies (in a relevant technical subject) or previous work experience, you’ll have developed polished communication skills, some political/community awareness and a good grasp of the factors influencing flood management. In particular you will have an enthusiasm for the role and to grow and develop this area of work.
