Description

Buckinghamshire County Council is entering one of the most exciting periods of change in its history. We’re looking to become a more agile, commercial and digitally-focussed organisation. The aim? To benefit our residents and shape our county for the future. With substantial investment in place, we now need people who are determined to make this transformation happen. In return, we offer some of the best benefits around. Everything from a good work-life balance and flexible working, to discounted public transport and sports centre membership.

About us

On 01 November 2018, it was announced by the government that the five councils in Buckinghamshire will become a single unitary authority in April 2020.  Any changes made to the structure of local authorities in the county may affect council employees in the future.  Therefore, the five councils have agreed to restrict applications to this position to current employees of the five councils for a period of 14 days from 16th October to 30th October.  External candidates are welcome to submit their application at any point; however, if a current employee applies during this 14 day period, their application will be assessed prior to the council considering applications from external candidates.

About the role

Are you keen to be involved with ensuring that new developments are designed well to account for and manage surface water flood risk? The award winning Sustainable Drainage team within the Lead Local Flood Authority assists in keeping Buckinghamshire attractive and thriving by supporting the implementation of SuDS in new developments. A key aspect of the role will be liaising with colleagues in the Local Planning Authorities as well as Developers and consultants to ensure that information on flood risk and SuDS meets best practice and national policy. You will be reviewing and commenting on drainage aspects of planning applications for minor and major developments and by doing this you will help in delivering statutory flood management duties. The role provides the opportunity to feed into the development of guidance documents which promote the use of SuDS on small scale projects.

This role is a 1 year fix term contract.

About you

You’ll have a key role supporting the Sustainable Drainage Team Leader to deliver the statutory responsibility to manage sustainable surface water drainage in major development and to support the Local Planning Authorities with their minor developments. You will have some knowledge of sustainable drainage systems and/or liaising with Local Planning Authorities and developers on drainage issues for planning applications. It’s the sort of knowledge and experience you may have gained while working in a previous consultancy, design, or planning role – or possibly through your degree (or equivalent).  Through you studies (in a relevant subject) or work experience, you’ll have developed good communication skills, organisational skills and a good understanding of the factors influencing flood management. An organised approach to ensuring that incoming and outgoing information is consistent and accurate is required.  In particular you need an enthusiasm for the area of work and a desire to learn and develop in the role.

Other information

Where our roles are customer-facing and you are required to speak to members of the public, the ability to converse at ease with customers and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential for the role.
