A bit about us

Highways England is the government-owned company charged with operating, maintaining and improving England's motorways and major A roads. In Cumbria and North Lancashire this includes managing, maintaining and improving the existing M6, M55, A585, M6, A590, A66 and the A595, routes that run through designated sites including the Lake District National Park and Morecambe Bay Nature Improvement Area.  The Government is investing a total of £11.35 billion in the enhancement and long-term maintenance of the network in the first Road Period (2015/16 – 2019/20). This not only presents an environmental challenge, but provides a huge opportunity to deliver these schemes in greater harmony with the environment than in the past. Not only this but there is a ring fenced budget for standalone environment improvement schemes in line with targets made within the Environment Strategy, Delivery Plan and Biodiversity Plan. Within the Operations Directorate and Asset Delivery Contract, this exciting role is directly linked to helping us manage our environmental assets which include a wide variety of habitats, species, structures, environmental barrier and wildlife fences, drainage ditches, outfalls as well as landscape and cultural heritage features.
