Here at Highways England our environmental team plays a huge part in upholding our values and ensuring the network is maintained and operated in a sustainable way. Join us as an Environmental Specialist and become an integral part of that team. If you have a passion for developing environmentally friendly engineering solutions, protecting and improving habitats, landscapes and cultural heritage, then this is the role for you. In this varied exciting role, you will get the chance to shape and make a real difference to our future. The Environmental Specialist will contribute to the development and delivery of projects and maintenance works for the region, providing technical expertise on environmental topics and outcomes.

 

Within the role you may be required to travel and work unsociable hours.

You will be required to drive as part of your role and you will need to have a full clean driving license to be considered for this position and maintain this during employment.

 

What you’ll be leading on

                                                                             
  1. Assessing environmental risks and impacts associated with projects in line with the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges, and proposing suitable mitigation.
  2. Undertaking and commissioning surveys and packages of works to inform future renewal and improvement projects.
  3. Identifying and developing environmental improvement studies across a range of disciplines, and compiling relevant documents, evidence and options for value management.  
  4. Monitoring the delivery of schemes, projects and maintenance activities, liaising with the relevant teams to identify and/or rectify issues.
  5. Ensuring that environmental inventory and condition information is captured and maintained in the relevant database(s), in line with agreed standards and timescales.
  6. Providing specialist environmental advice to Engineering Teams and Project Managers.
  7. Ensuring the health and safety needs and wellbeing of customers and employees are fully considered and accounted for throughout the planning and delivery of each service activity.
  8. Carrying out such other duties which are consistent with the nature and responsibilities of this role.
 

To be successful

 
  • Relevant infrastructure experience
  • Knowledge, understanding and experience of a broad range of environmental topics
  • Strong understanding of relevant UK legislation and codes of practice
  •  Practical experience in environmental management in construction
  • Understanding and experience of working to EIA principles
  • Experience dealing with external stakeholders such as Environment Agency, Natural England, Local Authorities, Historic England and the public
  • Good IT skills and familiarity with GIS packages
  • Confident delivering training and presentations
  • Passionate about delivering sustainability and innovation
  • Specialism in a relevant environmental discipline such as ecology, waste, noise or air quality highly desirable
