The Environmental Portfolio at The Pew Charitable Trusts
For more than twenty-five years, Pew has been a major force in educating the public and policy makers about the causes, consequences, and solutions to some of the world's most pressing environmental challenges. Our environment work spans all seven continents with nearly 200 professionals working full-time at the local, national, and international levels to reduce the scope and severity of global environmental problems, such as the erosion of large natural ecosystems that contain a great part of the world's remaining biodiversity, and the destruction of the marine environment.
Pew has worked in the United States and Canada since 1990 to protect vast stretches of wilderness and more recently expanded our land conservation efforts to Australia's Outback and Chilean Patagonia. Preserving these places offers an opportunity to conserve wildlife habitat, shorelines and pristine landscapes for current and future generations. Our work relies on the sciences of conservation, biology, and economy to advocate for sound solutions to the loss of biodiversity.
In the sea, reforms to how our oceans are managed are essential to address overfishing, pollution, and loss of habitat. Pew began its oceans program in the United States, focusing on ending overfishing and protecting fragile marine habitat. Since 2005, Pew's ocean conservation program has expanded around the world and has played a significant role in reforming marine fisheries management in the European Union and on the high seas, and creating marine reserves around the world. Our work is grounded in the best available science and our goals include reversing the decline of ocean life ranging from sharks and tunas to penguins and whales, and the habitat and conditions on which they depend.
Position Overview
The senior director, land conservation oversees a global program of initiatives to protect large ecosystems with intact habitat that supports native plant and animal species, including rivers, coastal waters and other critical marine ecosystems, and provides critical ecosystem services for human welfare. At present, this portfolio has initiatives to protect the land and coastal waters of Chilean Patagonia, the Outback of Australia and its adjacent waters, the boreal forests of northern Canada, and public lands and free flowing rivers in the U.S. There is also a project to reduce the impact of floods and sea level rise on the environment and U.S. taxpayers. These complex initiatives are managed by seasoned project teams that will report to the senior director. Project staff and consultants are based in various geographic locations across Chile, Canada, Australia and the U.S. The senior director leverages significant experience to oversee the professional staff in the existing program and will be leading efforts to design new initiatives in Latin America and potentially other developing countries around the world.
This position manages directors and project directors, as well as other project leadership, and reports to the vice president, environment. This position is based in Pew's Washington, D.C. office.
Responsibilities
- Oversee Pew's terrestrial conservation work, in the U.S. and globally, supervising staff and consultants leading these projects to produce measurable and meaningful results for projects.
- Work with staff within the environment portfolio and throughout the organization to design new initiatives in North America, South America and eventually other parts of the world that produce measurable and meaningful results for the environment portfolio.
- Provide leadership across the environment portfolio through active participation and membership in environment's leadership team and its senior management team, advising on programmatic and management issues
- Oversee policy coordination and analysis for topics of relevance across the broader environment portfolio, including for Pew engagement in major international treaties and agreements and at U.S. and international conferences.
- In collaboration with vice president, senior staff, and with guidance from the vice president and head of environment, oversee the development of board-related documents on land conservation, including annual project plans, memos on new or existing projects requesting funding, and project proposals.
- Oversee the work and development of relevant projects and staff. Supervise and direct senior staff who are leading teams. Assist directors and project directors in the development and monitoring of their respective budgets.
- Partner with the vice president and head of environment and other senior staff in the environment portfolio on portfolio wide strategic planning, in collaboration with program department's strategy unit and the executive vice president.
- Serve as a spokesperson to internal and external audiences about the goals, strategy and progress of Pew's land conservation work and the broader environment portfolio. These audiences include program and operational staff within the larger Pew institution, current and potential donors, members of the media, other conservation organizations, representatives of resource management agencies, international organizations, and policymakers and their staff.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required; an advanced degree in public policy, natural resources conservation and management, law or environmental science strongly preferred.
- At least 15 years of specialized experience in the field gained through professional education, training and professional experience, with responsibility for strategic planning, idea development, project management and a sophisticated understanding of the formulation of policy on a large scale is required. Extensive experience in natural resources conservation is strongly preferred as well as an in-depth understanding of directing and implementing advocacy campaigns.
- Minimum of eight plus years of previous direct supervisory experience required including experience managing performance management process for direct reports and providing career development advice and counsel, preferably with experience managing and developing public policy campaigns and talented advocacy and policy teams.
- Prior to commencing employment with Pew, candidates for this position who were registered to lobby in any jurisdiction must certify termination of previous registration(s) and provide copies of termination notices with said jurisdiction(s) to Pew.
- Experience in Latin America and the United States is strongly preferred.
- Spanish speaking skills required.
- A task-oriented style, with focus on achieving clear and ambitious goals. Demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines by maintaining a high level of organization. Able to develop and move projects forward with a high degree of independence and autonomy.
- Media-savvy and politically astute. Able to use media exposure to communicate conservation needs and impact policy deliberations.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Must be flexible, creative, consistent and assume high accountability for all areas of responsibility.
- Well-developed skills in diplomacy. Able to work productively with a wide array of different people and institutions that frequently disagree with and may be in competition with one another. Exceptional interpersonal skills, with seasoned judgment and analytical capacity, and must demonstrate strong collaborative spirit and ability to make decisions.
- Demonstrable experience of successfully managing staff and teams based in dispersed geographies, able to develop and manage productive relationships with consultants, partners and others who contribute to the development of a project.
- Ability to develop sophisticated program strategy and then set short- and long-term planning goals in line with the strategy. Persuasive, highly articulate, and good at “selling” ideas and gaining support and commitment for initiatives from individuals and organizations capable of providing financial support for Pew projects.
- Excellent time and project management skills. Highly flexible, with the ability to juggle multiple priorities, adjust to changing circumstances, remain attentive to details and identify resources for projects.
- The ability to make decisions after contemplating various courses of action, justify recommendations, and to be responsive, clear and firm with colleagues and partners.
- Exceptional written and oral communications skills, including an ease in briefly summarizing the essence of issues and means to address them. Strong oral, presentation, facilitation, and written communication skills such that complex ideas, thoughts and concepts are clearly articulated for a general audience. Clear, effective writing style.
- Strong operational management acumen. Ability to analyze budgetary information, assess organizational needs and problem solve within a large institution.

Travel
The incumbent in this position will travel throughout the US and the world approximately 20% of his/her time in order to develop and manage partnerships, attend international and domestic meetings, and to perform other business.
