Description
We are looking for ecologists (both experienced and novice) to support our delivery of bat surveys across Surrey during the 2022 survey season
(May to September)

The role

The Seasonal Ecologist role is an excellent opportunity for someone to kick start their ecological consultant career and gain valuable experience during the summer months.  The work will primarily involve undertaking bat surveys at dusk or dawn, and supporting other, more experienced ecologists.  All surveys will be undertaken as part of a team and you will be expected to arrive on site ahead of surveys to scope your surveyor location, undertake the survey and debrief with the project team once the survey is completed.  All training and equipment will be provided.  Bat surveys will be running from May to September 2022.  Work will be offered as available; there is no obligation for us to provide you with any specific hours and there is no obligation for you to be available when we request you to work.

Your skills

You will need to demonstrate your dependability, willingness to work and be ready to travel and work flexible hours.  Ideally, you will have a CSCS card.  Given the role involves travelling around Surrey, you will need to have a valid UK driver’s licence and access to your own transport.  Salary bands are provided below.  We will pay your travel time of up to an hour to reach a survey site and pay mileage of up to 120 miles (round trip) per survey; these will need to be subject to completion of timesheets and expense forms detailing mileage.

  • No previous relevant experience (training will be provided): £12 per hour
  • At least one year of relevant experience: £13.75 per hour
  • At least one year of relevant experience and a CSCS card: £14.75 per hour
  • Bat licence holder (Level 1 or Level 2): £19.00 per hour
  • Bat licence holder (Level 1 or Level 2) and a CSCS card: £20.00 per hour

We are committed to having an inclusive and diverse workplace and encourage applications from backgrounds which may be underrepresented in our sector, including people from minority ethnic backgrounds and people with disabilities.

Upon receipt of CVs we will arrange phone interviews as appropriate or turn down your application via email.

SWT Ecology Services

SWT Ecology Services has a dynamic and supportive team of experienced ecologists.  We are a fully owned subsidiary of Surrey Wildlife Trust and our office is in Pirbright, although remote working will be possible.  We are committed to SWT’s mission to restore nature across our county, creating a Living Landscape for all to enjoy.

A consultant ecologist’s role is to balance the objectives of developers with the needs of the environment.  SWT Ecology Services is an advocate for protecting key environmental assets whilst at the same time being a facilitator of development that improves the quality of life for local communities.  SWT Ecology Services manages the challenge of reconciling the two and sees each project as an opportunity to achieve the best possible outcome for both parties.

If this is the role for you:

Please send a CV and cover letter to Gabbie Graham, MD of SWT Ecology Services swtes.recruitment@surreywt.org.uk.

The deadline for applications is 5pm Monday 18th April 2022.  Interviews will be held remotely so you will need access to Zoom or Microsoft Teams.
