Description  

The Scientific Technical Officer will work with the Inshore Fisheries Team at FEAS. The STO will take a lead role in survey data analysis and stock assessment using existing methods and will participate in the annual shellfish survey programme.

Among the duties and responsibilities include:

  • Implementing existing routines for analysis and estimation of shellfish survey data
  • Running existing data limited stock assessment models
  • Modelling of existing time series data (catch, fishing effort)
  • Management and analysis of spatial data (VMS for inshore vessels)
  • Participating in annual shellfish surveys at sea
  • Maintaining data quality and data management standards
  • Attending ICES Working Groups relevant to shellfish assessment
  • Attending regional and national inshore fisheries meetings

Educational and Professional Requirements

  • A relevant third level degree in a science/marine science or related field
  • High level of proficiency with the R statistical programming language
  • Spatial data analysis skills in GIS, R or other relevant platforms.
  • Experience with SQL; query design
  • Strong data handling skills.
  • Proven scientific report writing skills.

Salary

Remuneration is in accordance with the Public Sector, Department of Finance approved Salary Scale for the Scientific & Technical Officer (Engineer III grade) with a salary of €30,987 - €64,981 per annum pro-rated with time worked. You will become a member of the Single Public Service Pension Scheme.

Duration of Contract:

Temporary specified purpose contract for a maximum duration of up to 31st December 2020 (EMFF funded Career Break Cover). The successful candidate will be on probation for the first six months of this contract.
