The Stockholm Environment Institute’s (SEI) York centre, based in the Environment Department at the University of York, is recruiting a Research Associate to become an integral member of a team working internationally to promote the mitigation of short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs), such as black carbon, tropospheric ozone and methane in the atmosphere. This research supports the activities of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC - http://www.ccacoalition.org/), an international organisation supported by the UN system with a goal to reduce SLCPs in countries across the World. You will join a team of researchers at SEI who are helping developing countries to plan emission reductions of SLCPs, air pollution and greenhouse gases.
You will work on projects funded by the Supporting NAtional Planning (SNAP) initiative of the CCAC and the Low EmissIon Development Planning (LEDP) initiative of SEI to help develop a national planning toolkit using modelling approaches to demonstrate the socio-economic benefits that can be achieved through SLCP mitigation. You will also provide training in the use of the toolkit to developing country practitioners and governments with the aim of helping countries develop their own national action plans. You will help to manage and report progress and impacts of these projects in SEI, and to the CCAC.
You must have a PhD in atmospheric/environmental science or other relevant subject. You will have an interest in the science, impacts and mitigation strategies for air pollution and climate change, ideally with experience of atmospheric transport modelling, emission inventory compilation or impact assessment (e.g. fine particulate matter impacts on health or tropospheric ozone impacts on ecosystems and crops). You should be highly numerate, confident in manipulating large spreadsheet databases, with experience of using, and possibly developing, computer models for air pollution assessment. It is very important that you are a team player and have excellent interpersonal skills as you will need to help enhance the capacity of developing county researchers and staff of governmental agencies. The post will involve extensive international travel. Excellent spoken and written English language skills are essential and French/Spanish as a second language is desirable.
