The Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH), part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), is the UK’s Centre of Excellence for research in the terrestrial and freshwater environmental sciences.
We offer a prestigious Research Associate training programme to develop skilled UK/EU scientists for the future of European environmental research. Within this 3 year training programme we are offering an exciting opportunity for a web developer to be at the heart of the delivery of CEH’s environmental data, working on a range of projects. You will be based within a small team in the attractive surroundings of our Wallingford site.
Specific tasks:
The main role will be to:
• develop interactive tools for the visualisation of environmental information, within internal and externally funded projects
• contribute to the development of reusable components within CEH’s Environmental Information Platform to deliver CEH data through a range of applications
• interact with end-users, from CEH scientists to European water resource managers, to discuss and identify requirements
You will have a high level of skill and demonstrable experience in web development, ideally using JavaScript for producing user interfaces. Designs will be developed in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to extend existing frameworks within CEH’s Environmental Information Platform to incorporate new visualisation approaches. The development will be undertaken with a number of other front- and back-end developers to produce reusable UI components using open-source toolkits.
As a key aspect of the role will be the interaction with end-users, as well as fellow developers in your group and at other CEH sites, you will have good communications skills and the ability to lead discussions of user requirements.
You will be developing intuitive and innovative approaches to disseminating environmental data, therefore an eye for design and demonstrable skills for presenting data in maps and graphs would be very beneficial.
The role will involve interacting with a range of scientific and public stakeholders for the identification of requirements for visualisation tools, and designing and trialling a range of front-end user interfaces.
There will be a requirement for UK and European travel occasionally throughout this training post duration.

CEH can only apply for a work permit in cases where there are no suitably qualified or experienced resident workers; otherwise applicants should normally be resident in the UK or a national of the European Union.
