Are you passionate about the power of data and research to bring about environmental change? The John Muir Trust (JMT) needs to bring forward compelling evidence if it is to protect wild places. That’s why we’re looking for a Research & Data Manager to join the team at an exciting time of organisational growth and development. 

The Research & Data Manager is a new post, based in the policy team and will work across all departments of the Trust as well as externally. The role will gather, commission and collate data and evidence in relation to the Trust’s impact at delivering its charitable objectives – on the land and in policy advocacy.

The successful applicant will have extensive relevant experience in gathering and collating data in ecological and social science; demonstrable ability to collate data succinctly and provide concise; accurate and substantiated briefings to tight deadlines.

Main Responsibilities

Collating and analysing data

  • Setting and ensuing accurate and timely collection of relevant data across Trust wide activities e.g. habitat data; visitor data; impact on wild places etc;
  • Commissioning research and reports around key topics.
  • Analysis and critical review of internal and external data and what it is saying;

Producing briefings

  • Writing concise summaries on relevant topics
  • Clearly presenting and communicating data to staff; Trustees; members and external audiences

 

 

Person Specification

Essential Experience

  • Research in ecological and or social science
  • Proven track record of report writing.
  • History of dissemination of information to large and diverse groups through broad range of media.

Essential Skills and Knowledge

  • Can interrogate analytical information and draw out key messages and findings to support organisational decision making
  • Excellent communicator with strong written and oral skills;
  • Ability to engage with external specialists at appropriate stages of policy and project development
  • Ability to present and convey complex ideas and issues clearly and coherently and to a wide range of different audiences.
  • Sound understanding of ecology, rural economics, and practical land management
  • Can prioritise agreed objectives and manage workloads against deadlines
  • Experienced in managing research processes and data compliance

  • Adaptable to new ways of working and can contribute energy and ideas to teams
  • Confident in sharing specialist knowledge with others
  • Energy, enthusiasm and flair to work hard and achieve ambitious targets as part of a team

Qualifications

  • Educated to PhD level or equivalent
  • Evidence of Continued Professional Development relevant to the role purpose and level.

Terms and Conditions

Salary:                                        £34,000

Location:                                    Subject to discussion.

Probationary period:                 3 months

Line Manager:                           Head of Policy

Pension:                                     5% contribution to group auto-enrolment scheme

Holidays:                                    34 days per year plus allows of 2 ‘wild days’

Hours:                                        35 hours per week (flexible working applies)
