About us

If you’re part of the Environment Agency (EA), you’re part of the solution. Working with us means protecting and improving the environment and tackling issues of national importance. We’re based across England, and our responsibilities span industry regulation, flood defences, land contamination, water quality, fisheries and conservation.

Are you passionate about the environment? Join us and help create a cleaner, safer and healthier environment for people and wildlife.

We are looking for professional, enthusiastic people to join our team of Regulatory Officers. Working across the country, you will play a critical frontline role. You will regulate a range of businesses who operate in the Producer Responsibility regime. Your job will be to ensure that producers of waste comply with their responsibilities. You must have an eye for detail and will take appropriate enforcement action where necessary to protect the environment and drive towards a circular economy.

The role is varied and challenging. You must be able to work as part of a dispersed team requiring you to be well-organised, self-motivated and disciplined.

Whatever your background, you’ll be interested in the environment, making a difference and using environmental regulation to achieve improvements that are significant but not always visible to the general public.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.

Where will you work?

The Environment Agency operates across England. You will be based in one of our new pan area teams and you will need to travel. The team consists of Regulatory Officers and Senior Technical Officers who specialise in monitoring compliance at regulated and some non-regulated facilities. They also undertake enforcement action where offences have occurred. Enforcement includes prosecutions and Enforcement Undertakings. The team is friendly, supportive and dedicated.

What do you need?

We're seeking talented individuals with diverse backgrounds and skill sets to join our team. Don't worry if you aren't familiar with the waste industry or regulatory work - we'll provide comprehensive training to give you the tools needed to succeed. Not only will you have the chance to work outdoors and indoors, but you'll also have the opportunity to show off your interpersonal talents. Demonstrating positive behaviour is crucial to us. You should be able to show us that you:

  • • Possess organisational and prioritisation skills
  • • Demonstrates confidence and assertiveness
  • • Experienced in IT/computer literate, especially Excel
  • • Comfortable with numbers and data sets
  • • Passionate about the environment, familiar with environmental regulation/enforcement
  • • Capable of handling confrontational situations
  • • Able to adjust your communication style to be effective
  • • Team-oriented, able to integrate easily
  • • Keeps accurate records
  • • Must have a valid driving license

Don’t be put off applying if you don’t have a degree or similar. We value your life experience.

What’s in it for you?

You’ll benefit from a culture that embraces difference and includes everyone, where you’ll feel supported and trusted to do the right thing. We’ll invest in you and allow you to grow and shape your career.

What’s more, you’ll have access to our great benefits package including:

  • A competitive salary of £29706
  • 25 days holiday + 8 bank holidays
