The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation. ZSL’s mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. This is realised by carrying out field conservation and research in over 50 countries across the globe and through education and awareness-raising at our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, inspiring people to take conservation action.
With global biodiversity in rapid decline and a growing number of species on the brink of extinction, advances in technology are becoming ever more important in helping us to solve these conservation challenges. ZSL is working with a range of expert partners to design, develop, manufacture and deploy innovative and integrated technological tools that will revolutionise wildlife surveillance, biodiversity monitoring and behaviour change through digital communications. ZSL is one of the leading conservation organisations pushing innovation in this field. The team were the first to deliver a real-time satellite enable anti-poaching alarm system, (Instant Detect) an open source animal tracker (Mataki) and software to engage the public to analyse camera trap data (Instant Wild), alongside innovative public engagement platforms such as the #wearetherangers Minecraft experience with United for Wildlife.
These technologies may be developed and deployed directly by ZSL or shared/sold with trusted third party organisations. Conservation Technology aims to deploy open source solutions that solve conservation problems and share these with the wider community, to increase capabilities worldwide.
