Description

The Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation (RTFO) Unit is the UK renewable transport fuels regulator and a world leading centre of expertise on the environmental sustainability of low carbon fuels.

The Unit delivers one of Government’s primary policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through decarbonising UK transport. The scheme’s value is approximately £1.5bn in 2020 and incorporates the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Regulations.

The team is based at both the DfT’s head office in central London and a new DfT office in central Hastings. Many of the team work flexibly, with a mixture of Hastings, London and home based as well as part-time work patterns.

Do you have experience of communicating complex information to a wide variety of stakeholders?

If so we have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Sustainability Specialist to join us at Department for Transport, and we'd love to hear from you!

Job description

We are looking for a highly motivated professional with a strong knowledge of renewable fuels and/or climate change to work in the RTFO Unit to help deliver UK climate change commitments. The role will include undertaking and managing technical projects, dealing with enquiries from industry, as well as being responsible for the publication of the quarterly statistical reports. You will be the line manager for the HEO Statistical Officer. The role also involves engagement with a diverse set of stakeholders to secure buy-in for the scheme; as well as taking a role in the team’s sustainability compliance process.

This is a challenging and exciting area of work, combining technical complexity and controversy with a strong international and EU dimension. Biofuels – and other low carbon alternatives to petrol and diesel - are one of the key technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transport energy. They provide a substantial contribution to meeting domestic carbon budgets, and there are targets to increase their uptake at international level.

Ensuring that renewable fuels are produced sustainably and deliver genuine greenhouse gas reductions is an essential aspect of this role. Our policy is increasingly focused on waste derived fuels and as we look to increase supply we will need to turn to novel and advanced technologies. There is an economic opportunity for the UK if we can manufacture these fuels and export the technology around the world.

Whilst electrification is likely to significantly reduce the usage of fuels for cars and light commercial vehicles in the medium to long term, low carbon liquid and gaseous fuels are likely to continue to be required for use in aviation and freight for decades to come.

Please note - although the role could be based in either London or Hastings there is a business need to work in the Hastings office 1 day per week.

Responsibilities

You will be responsible for:

  • Ensuring the accurate and timely publication of the quarterly statistical publications, as well as line management of the team Statistical Officer.
  • Managing technical projects such as guidance updates and publication, and research into future amendments to the scheme.
  • Acting as a point of contact for the fuels industry to answer technical enquiries about the RTFO and renewable transport fuels.
  • Assisting with the RTFO Unit’s sustainability compliance process.

About You

This is a technical role and requires knowledge of the renewable fuel industry, climate science, and associated sustainability challenges in the context of decarbonising transport, as well as current UK and European policy. We are looking for a candidates who can bring strong project management skills to the role, with the ability to communicate complex information to a wide variety of stakeholders.

You will have experience in the field of climate change, sustainability, renewable energy, and/or life cycle analysis, as well as experience in managing and carrying out technical projects. We are also looking for strong knowledge of data management and/or statistical tools.
