The Centre for Ecology & Hydrology is the UK's Centre of Excellence for integrated research in terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems and their interaction with the atmosphere. As part of the Natural Environment Research Council, we provide National Capability based on innovative, independent and cross-disciplinary science and long-term environmental monitoring, forming an integral part of NERC's vision and strategy.
CEH is seeking a senior scientist to develop, lead and deliver major aspects of our Natural Capital Science Area both in the UK and internationally. We expect you to develop relationships with funders and stakeholders, write proposals, manage staff and deliver research outcomes. To support this we are offering an exciting opportunity to build and lead a team including recruitment of two new team members to augment our expertise in related fields, such as economics, political ecology and social science. As a key member of the Science Area core team, you will also have a key role in influencing, developing and implementing the wider CEH science strategy.
We are looking for applicants with the following skills and experience:
- In-depth knowledge of the science of natural capital and ecosystem services through previous research in a university or other research organisation, supported by a strong publication record in high impact journals
- Knowledge of national and European policy on natural capital and ecosystem services
- Expertise in related disciplines such as ecological processes, biodiversity and climate change plus in depth understanding of economics and other relevant social sciences gained through past involvement in, or leadership of, cross-disciplinary projects
- Evidence of strategic thinking that will enable you to contribute to CEH’s scientific objectives and promote CEH as a world class Centre of Excellence
- A track record in producing innovative ideas and winning major research proposals in the UK, Europe and possibly worldwide, so that you can raise future funding
- The ability to lead, mentor and inspire staff to support you and deliver our scientific aims
- An aptitude for taking opportunities forward and dealing with the challenges of organisational change
- Proven ability to manage large multi-national and cross-disciplinary projects, including associated budget management
- Strong communication and influencing skills to support engagement with funding bodies, such as government departments and the European Commission
- The ability to present and discuss findings with non-specialists to effect stakeholder engagement
- A willingness to travel within the UK, Europe and worldwide
- A PhD in environmental/natural/social science
