About us

If you’re part of the Environment Agency (EA), you’re working with us to protect and improve the environment, tackling issues of national importance. We’re based across England, and our responsibilities span industry regulation, flood defences, land contamination, water quality, fisheries and conservation.

Such broad scope of work calls for diverse, multi-skilled teams. Together, we’ll promote sustainable growth, tackle climate change and secure a better future for everyone.

As a permitting officer you’ll be playing an important role in our work on protecting the environment. You may assess applications for a range of environmental permitted activities across the country, from landfills to metal recycling, from sewer overflows to abstraction from rivers to supply drinking water, to spreading waste on land for agricultural benefit. Environmental Permits set out the responsibilities and limitations on the activities we regulate. You will speak with permit applicants from multi-national companies to individual householders. You’ll carry out technical assessments according to EA processes and regulatory obligations, to protect the environment and local communities.

You’ll join our dedicated National Permitting Service, assessing applications for environmental permits and licenses. Working with a team of permitting officers, you’ll assess a caseload of applications, work on environmental permitting legislation and make decisions on applications.

You will work in one of our permitting regimes: Waste, Water Quality, Water Resources or Mobile Plant.

It's highly varied, challenging work that plays a key role in creating a cleaner, greener, safer environment. You’ll develop relationships with a range of partners and support key functions including flooding and environmental response.

Please note: There are both Grade 3 and Grade 4 Permitting officer roles available. As a G4 permitting officer, you will be expected to work independently on some of our more complex permits and coach, mentor and support our G3 permitting offers in their roles.

What do I need?

Although experience of environmental permitting isn’t essential, relevant experience in the environment and regulation would be a distinct advantage as technical competence is important in the G4 permitting officer role.

The most important thing we are looking for is a passion for the environment and people who are keen to protect it by regulating damaging activities.

You’ll need to have:

  • Experience in coaching and supporting others through technical challenges.
  • Ability to manage your own time and workload and meet performance targets related to you and your team.
  • Ability to make and justify informed, timely decisions.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build strong relationships with your customers.
  • Great IT skills including experience of working with and analysing data, managing information, and using tools like Word, Excel and specialist digital tools relevant to your job.

What’s in it for you?

You’ll benefit from a culture that embraces difference and includes everyone, where you’ll feel supported and trusted to do the right thing. We’ll invest in you and allow you to grow and shape your career.

What’s more, you’ll have access to our great benefits package including:

  • A competitive salary of £28,785 pro-rata.
  • 25 days holiday + 8 bank holidays
  • Great career opportunities
  • Maternity, paternity, and adoption leave scheme
  • A range of flexible working options, plus many more!

As an organisation we strive to reflect the communities we serve, to achieve this we welcome applications from all backgrounds regardless of race, sexual orientation, and religion. We also welcome applications for part-time hours.
