People Management Officer

Full-time or part-time considered (minimum 3 days per week)

Moreton-in-Marsh/hybrid working

A varied role to support the Managing Director with the people management function of an international human rights charity based in Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire.

Forest Peoples Programme (FPP) is a human rights charity that supports tropical forest peoples to defend their lands and livelihoods. We have 70 people on the team including human rights lawyers, anthropologists and social scientists working with communities and local organisations around the global tropical belt. Up to half of the team live and work remotely. We are looking for a human resources officer, to support the Managing Director with all aspects of people management. For a full list of duties see the Job Description below. The successful candidate will be personable, well organised, IT literate and enjoy teamwork. An interest in the work of FPP and previous HR experience is essential and experience using dedicated HR platforms a strong advantage.

Terms

This can be a full-time or part-time role (minimum 60% time or 3 days per week), based in Moreton-in-Marsh, though a remote or hybrid working arrangement will be considered.

Salary: £30,000 - £36,500 (FTE), depending on experience.

Holiday allowance: 25 days’ annual leave (pro rata), plus UK bank holidays and the days between Christmas and New Year.

The right to live and work in the UK is a requirement of this position.

Tasks and responsibilities

In collaboration with other FPP staff, the role may include:

  • Managing the Citation Atlas HR database including contract production, handbook updating, monitoring annual leave and toil allocations, training line managers and staff on using the platform, uploading personal documents onto the system
  • Managing the Annual Review schedule alerting line managers of upcoming reviews and filing written reviews, plus follow up of training needs and tracking responses to issues raised during staff Annual Reviews
  • Tracking the spend of the Training and Development budget from Core funds.
  • Managing the allocation of welfare managers and arranging welfare managers meetings.
  • Reviewing employment and working conditions, including ensuring staff workstations at the office and at home are fit for purpose.
  • Support with providing information to staff on maternity/paternity cover and end of contract processes, sickness, or compassionate leave – liaising, when necessary, with Citation advisors
  • Recruitment – advertising roles with a lens on diversity and inclusivity; receiving and collating applications; assisting with long-shortlisting; preparing the interview schedule; and inviting applicants for interview; managing the interview schedule on the day; and, following up on recruitment outcomes.
  • Producing and reviewing induction plans for incoming staff, liaising with Line Managers and scheduling slots for the relevant staff carrying out the sessions.
  • Carrying out induction sessions with new staff on: FPP policies and procedures related to staff management and welfare; the use of Citation, where to find relevant staff management documents on the FPP system etc.
  • Keep relevant FPP policies and procedures updated as required.
  • Prepare annual incremental pay rise letters (when an increment is approved by the Board)
  • Track contract renewal dates.
  • Liaise with the Home Office on visa applications.
  • Oversee the appropriate management of work experience students, interns, and other volunteers.
  • Liaise with finance team on payroll updates.
  • Provide HR information for audits and funding applications.
  • Support to People Management sub-group of the senior management team (the Programme and Coordination Management Team - PCMT)

Skills and Experience

Essential criteria:

  • 5 years’ experience in an HR role, ideally in an NGO or charity setting
  • Understanding of, and commitment to the mission and vision of FPP
  • Personable and well organised
  • Experience working collaboratively across different platforms and cultures
  • Experience of using a dedicated HR platform a strong advantage
  • IT literate

Desirable criteria:

  • French or Spanish language would be desirable
  • HR qualifications
  • Experience or study in an area related to FPP’s work, mission, and vision
  • Experience or willingness to learn working with international payroll
