Do you want to help people reconnect with nature? Do you think all children should have a wild childhood?

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Wildlife Trust for Birmingham and the Black Country. We are entering a new phase of development and know we need to engage more people with the natural world to protect wildlife and to ensure everyone benefits from contact with nature.

The successful applicant will develop the People and Wildlife Department, building our membership and capacity and working with a wide range of stakeholders including

-          Health providers to connect people with nature to benefit their own health and wellbeing

-          Education providers and youth organisations to develop nature conservation and ecological skills and understanding in our areas

-          Land owners such as housing associations and health care providers to engage their clients in managing their land for nature

-          Schools and community groups to ensure every child has a wild experience in nature

Working as part of the Senior Management Team, the post holder will contribute to developing the strategic direction of the Trust and generating income to support our activities.

Full Time (37.5 hours per week)

Flexible Hours Available.

23 days annual leave (3 to be taken over Christmas and New Year) plus

Statutory bank holidays

Permanent contract (subject to 6 month probationary period)

Pension scheme. Employer’s contribution 7%.

The nature of this post means that out of hours and weekend working may be required.

£29,709 - £30,594 depending on experience

Location

This post will be based at the Head Office of The Wildlife Trust for Birmingham and the Black Country but the post holder will occasionally be expected to visit other sites as required.

Job Description

Principal responsibilities

  • Leadership and coordination of the People and Wildlife Department covering:
    • Community engagement
    • Schools and education programmes
    • Member recruitment and retention
    • Communications to a variety of stakeholders
    • Health and wellbeing projects
    • Developing networks including corporate partnerships
    • Developing sustainable funding streams to manage department and deliver projects including bid writing
    • Increasing membership of the Wildlife Trust for Birmingham and the Black Country to achieve development targets
    • Managing departmental budgets
    • Developing people to be champions for nature
    • Developing a successful communications strategy for a range of stakeholders including our members to increase brand recognition of the Trust across Birmingham and the Black Country
    • Developing a wide network of partners to work with engaging people with and inspiring people by nature
    • Contributing to strategic development of the Trust
    • Management of education centres including designing a programme of engagement activities to be run at each (Moorcroft, EcoPark)

Person Specification

Personal Criteria
 The successful application must be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Knowledge of charitable sector
  • Knowledge and experience of working with a membership organisation
  • Relevant qualifications and professional experience
  • Be able to maintain high levels of enthusiasm and self-motivation.
  • Knowledge of the Wildlife Trust movement; our Living Landscapes and Living Seas programmes of work.
  • The ability to work on their own initiative and co-operate as part of a team.
  • Be approachable, friendly and show tact and diplomacy when dealing with members of the public and stakeholders.
  • Have a mature and flexible approach to work.
  • A strong commitment to the protection of the environment , of wildlife and a love of nature

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities.
The successful applicant must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Communicating effectively to a wide range of stakeholders
  • Bid writing and income generation
  • Managing safely including through risk assessments and safe working practices.
  • Successfully working across media platforms
  • A good knowledge of the role of key organisations in the environmental sector.
  • Monitoring and evaluation of project outcomes (including soft outcomes).
  • leading activities and events aimed at a variety of ages and abilities
  • A range of computer packages including MS Office.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of membership database systems such as Subscriber
  • Knowledge of the third sector in Birmingham and the Black Country
  • Knowledge of ecology and/or landscape scale conservation principles

 

Experience.
The successful applicant must evidence wide ranging professional experience in the following areas:

  • Development and management of community engagement and education projects
  • Staff  development and management
  • Working in either a community development or environmental field
  • Successful financial management and budget control
  • Working and engaging with diverse communities

Desirable

  • Work in a people related learning environment such as a teacher or youth worker
  • Development of education projects involving environmental issues
