Description  

This exciting post affords a varied workload to help NatureScot deliver its policies and priorities in Argyll & Outer Hebrides.  The post will principally be working within Mid-Argyll and Kintyre, but will also support work in other parts of Argyll and there will be an expectation of being able to work flexibly throughout the area.

The post holder will tackle a diverse portfolio of tasks relating to both land/freshwater and coastal/marine management.  The key tasks of this post will focus on development control casework, managing the Kintyre Local Goose Management Scheme, Agri-Environment and Climate Scheme delivery, and protected areas casework. The post will also involve proactive work to address climate change and reverse biodiversity loss.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities  

 Responsible for implementing NatureScot’s policies and priorities in Argyll, in particular across Mid-Argyll and Kintyre, as part of the Argyll and Outer Hebrides team through:

- Responding to casework consultations, including planning applications, renewable energy proposals, marine licences, Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) consents, Controlled Activities Regulations licences and requests for advice both internally and externally as required. 

- Lead for the delivery of the Kintyre Local Goose Management Scheme including coordinating and undertaking goose counts, and managing payments to scheme participants.

- Act as an Agri-Environment and Climate Scheme case officer.

- Provide advice to stakeholders and land managers on protected areas management (including Natura sites and SSSIs) and wildlife management including protected species casework.

- Represent NatureScot in local partnerships and foster positive relationships with local communities and agencies.

- Involvement in new initiatives to address Climate Change, and Biodiversity Loss.

- Assisting with work in other geographical areas as required.

Prerequisites Required:

- Disclosure Scotland  (This is part of our standard security checks and SNH will arrange a Disclosure Scotland check for all successful candidates)

- Gaelic Language (As part of our commitment to our Gaelic Language Plan, Gaelic is a desirable skill for all roles within SNH)

Skills

- HND or equivalent qualification or practical experience in an environmental discipline or countryside management.

- Knowledge of habitats and species conservation and management, land use and natural heritage issues.

- Knowledge of the local area and its natural history.

- Familiarity with the general functions and statutory duties of NatureScot.

- Understanding, preferably including experience of, the Agri-Environment and Climate Scheme and other methods to promote positive management of designated sites (SSSIs & Natura sites).

- Understanding, preferably including experience of, of the Planning System and Nature Conservation Legislation.

- Good interpersonal skills with an ability to work in partnership, to foster good relations and to encourage actions by others.

- Good communication skills, both written and verbal, including IT.

- Excellent organisational and time management skills and ability to effectively prioritise workload.

- Driving licence or other means of transport.
