Introduction
The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) works to safeguard the world’s seafood supply by promoting the best environmental choice in seafood to the consumer through the use of its eco-label. The organization is recognised internationally as a groundbreaking and credible solution to the serious environmental problem of overfishing.
Supporting and reporting to the Paris-based Country Manager, the Outreach officer will assist him on his outreach work toward fisheries and commercial stakeholders in France. The post holder will increase awareness and understanding of the MSC programme and the part the MSC plays in delivering solutions to the environmental challenges of overfishing amongst these stakeholder groups. Building effective working relations and securing support of potential partners and stakeholders are primary goals of this position.
The work of the outreach officer is closely aligned with other outreach activities of the MSC in Europe and the outreach officer will also be involved in ongoing and future MSC projects.
There is no direct administrative support available and the post holder is expected to be self-servicing. The post holder will be asked to assist the Country Manager with administrative tasks.
Required Skills, Experience and Personal Characteristics
Skills
- Post-graduate degree in with a related field such as fisheries, marine conservation or equivalent with strong knowledge in fishery management, halieutic sciences and the seafood industr
- Strong communications skills to manage commercial and fisheries enquiries in consultation with relevant team members
- Ability to grasp new concepts quickly and distil complex information into plain French
- Excellent organisational skills to effectively manage a wide variety of essential tasks
- Ability to meet tight deadlines and prioritise tasks – ability to manage a busy workload successfully
- Perfect written and spoken French and fluent English, written and spoken to a high level, are essential
- Ability to work on own initiative and within budget
- Good interpersonal and influencing skills
- Good computer literacy, including proficiency in MS Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel.
Experience
- One to three years’ experience within the seafood industry, marine conservation or the fishing sector.
- Desirable: Existing network with fishing industry stakeholders in France.
