The Role

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a dynamic monitoring team undertaking field-based sampling and surveying of surface water environments across the UK. The successful applicant will be central in diligent data collection to recognised industry standards in aquatic habitats that include rivers, estuaries, and wetlands.  You will be supporting our senior team in the collection of baseline data essential for evidence based environmental management by the construction, infrastructure and water industry. 

 

Your core fieldwork will focus on sampling of surface water quality but opportunities will be available to support our wider programme that includes, surveys of biological communities (fish, macroinvertebrates, macrophytes), physical characteristics (habitat assessment, river flow and levels). For the water quality sampling you will be part of a team of four, working in pairs each day and supported by our senior team based in Thruxton, Wiltshire. You will be completing a programme of sampling that includes working from a boat collecting reservoir samples, sampling of rivers from headwaters to tidal limit and macroinvertebrate sample collection using kick sample methodology.  

 

The role will be remotely based and you will work across the South East of England on a daily basis. You will need to be based within commutable distance from Bewl Water, East Sussex as this will be a central starting point each day. The role will involve considerable driving and travelling between sampling points for delivery of a busy programme and driving will be shared between team members. 

 

Please note that this position is for a fixed term contract of 6 months. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Supporting with field work planning and logistics 
  • Supporting with field based data collection 
  • Supporting data entry and management
  • Supporting with equipment maintenance and calibration
  • Biosecurity of equipment and PPE. 

 

The Ideal Candidate

You will enjoy working outdoors in all weathers and have an interest in environmental management, protection, and enhancement. You will be organised, highly motivated, be an excellent communicator and have the ability to work as part of a team. As a team player you will enjoy building positive relationships with co-workers and offering solutions to challenges for achievement of our common goal. As a keen listener with the ability to follow instruction you will have an eye for detail and pride yourself on the diligent delivery of your role to guarantee the accuracy and reliability of the data you collect. Flexibility, adaptability, and resilience will be a core attribute that will ensure you can adapt to a highly dynamic schedule of monitoring working. You will have the ability to swim, hold a clean driving licence, be comfortable driving long distances each day and where required will work away from home in delivery of our programme.
