Description

The Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH) is part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and is the UK's Centre of Excellence for integrated research in terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems and their interaction with the atmosphere. Working in partnership with the research community, policy makers, industry and society, CEH undertakes cutting edge research to deliver world class solutions to the most complex environmental challenges facing humankind.

We are looking for a meteorologist to work with land surface scientists in an active, research-focused team. The focus of the research is to better understand the feedback between the atmosphere and land surface, with a focus on the African and Indian monsoons.

The work in these projects will focus on how land surface properties affect the amount, timing and location of rainfall. Through use of observational datasets, we hope to better understand the dominant processes, and use this knowledge to assess the realism of land-atmosphere feedbacks within weather and climate models.

If successful in this role you would:

•    develop and apply new techniques using earth observation data to isolate key processes in surface-atmosphere feedbacks
•    analyse atmospheric model output on a range of scales to quantify feedback processes and evaluate the models using observations
•    write scientific papers detailing research findings
•    collaborate with partners in UK and overseas
•    contribute to new proposals for research funding.

Skills and qualifications required:

•    you will have a 2.1 Degree in either physical sciences or mathematics with element/modules of computing, plus a PhD in a numerate science (preferably meteorology), or a Master’s degree with relevant experience proven ability in analysing scientific datasets
•    a strong track record of producing scientific papers
•    have a proven ability in scientific programming (e.g. Fortran)
•    have experience of using Earth Observation data
•    possess excellent communication skills
•    have good team working skills and can demonstrate the ability to develop effective collaborations
•    have good organisational and  time management skills
•    be able  to travel overseas occasionally
•    ideally have scientific team leadership skills, or the potential to develop these skills.

Training will be provided to develop specific technical skills if required. Within this position, there will be opportunities for you to develop new proposals for funding, and build a long-term research career within CEH.

Eligibility to apply

To work for CEH, you must be eligible to live and work in the UK without the requirement for a work permit. CEH can only apply for a work permit in cases where there are no suitably qualified or experienced resident workers; otherwise applicants should normally be resident in the UK or a national of the European Union.  Please do not apply if you require a visa to work in the UK.
