Salary:                                    Circa £32,000

Start Date:                             28 August 2017

Location:                                Fauna & Flora International, Cambridge, UK

Founded in 1903, Fauna & Flora International (FFI) is the world’s longest established international conservation organisation. Our vision is to create a sustainable future for the planet where biodiversity is conserved by the people living closest to it. We aim to do this through the conservation of threatened species and ecosystems worldwide, choosing solutions that are sustainable, based on sound science and take account of human needs. We have become a trusted entity in the world of conservation. Today FFI is active in over 40 countries.

Since its inception in 1903, FFI has published a journal for its members and the wider conservation community. A leading journal of conservation research, Oryx—The International Journal of Conservation publishes peer-reviewed articles about biodiversity conservation, conservation policy and sustainable use, and the interactions of these matters with social, economic and political issues. Oryx has a particular interest in material with the potential to improve conservation management and practice. A core tenet of Oryx’s work is to support the publishing and communication aspirations of conservation practitioners and researchers worldwide, and to build capacity for conservation.

The Oryx Editorial Office in Cambridge is staffed by a full-time Editor, a full-time Managing Editor and a full-time Editorial Assistant. The Editorial Office manages all matters from submission of manuscripts through to publication of scientific articles both in print and online. Much of this is managed through our online journal management system.

FFI is seeking a Managing Editor to join the Oryx editorial team. With a passion for detail that enables you to know whenand when notto use an em dash and an Oxford comma, you’ll also be able to step back to see the bigger picture involved in the production of a quarterly scientific journal. You will have undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications in conservation, environmental studies, or a related subject, and experience of copyediting and proofreading scientific articles. With excellent writing, organisational and prioritising skills you will be highly motivated, show initiative and have the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

The successful candidate will be expected to become involved in all aspects of the journal production process, as well as working closely with colleagues in the Conservation Capacity & Leadership team to deliver Oryx’s capacity building work. S/he will be an ambassador for the journal within FFI and among FFI’s partners and the conservation community. This is a dynamic position that will suit an individual with the desire to shape the future of a well-respected conservation journal.
