The Opportunity

TEP are looking for an experienced ecologist and licenced bat consultant to manage a variety of ecological survey and assessment projects.  The successful candidate will be given the opportunity to contribute to and lead on high-profile projects.  This position would appeal to someone with at least four years’ relevant consultancy experience with a range of survey skills and knowledge of ecology in the planning system.  This is a full time (37.5 hrs per week) position but we will also consider reduced working hours. 

You will sit within our ecology team which includes over 40 in-house ecologists supported by a network of trusted sub consultants.  Our ecologists are a close-knit team, promoting knowledge sharing and support.  We have a strong focus on continual development providing informal and structured training and encouraging staff to progress through the CIEEM membership levels and to obtain Chartered status.

You will work alongside colleagues from other environmental professions including landscape designers, arborists, planners, archaeologists and landscape managers.  This is a permanent position offering you the opportunity to grow in your ecological career.

We welcome applicants located within commuting distance of our London, Market Harborough or Warrington office.  You will typically be assigned projects within your region but you will need to travel to projects across England, Wales and Scotland.  Occasional travel to other TEP offices will also be required.  For the right candidate we will consider home working if based in South East England. 

The Role and Requirements

You will hold a Natural England Class 2 Bat Licence (we may consider candidates who hold a Class 1 licence and are working towards Class 2 or candidates who hold an NRW licence and are eligible for a Natural England licence).  Experience holding EPS mitigation licences for bats is desirable.  You will have experience of designing, pricing and implementing bat surveys and be confident advising others on the requirement for bat surveys on their projects. 

You will actively manage a wide range of field surveys and will be responsible for ensuring the advice and recommendations resulting from these surveys are communicated effectively to clients through written reports and verbal communication.  Many of our clients appreciate us helping them through the planning and licensing processes, so experience of advising clients is required.

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate:

  • Self-management skills, overseeing a busy and varied workload, supervising field staff and co-ordinating project work with other professionals in TEP;
  • Attention to detail and accuracy, particularly in respect of quality assurance, delivery of contracts on time and within budget;
  • Checking the quality of work produced by others;
  • High levels of written and verbal communication; and
  • Experience of contributing to meetings with clients and design teams.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Degree in relevant ecology discipline
  • Natural England survey licence for bats (Level 2 licence preferred however we may consider candidates who hold a Class 1 licence and are working towards Class 2 or candidates who hold an NRW licence and are eligible for a Natural England licence)
  • Membership of CIEEM (Full membership or eligibility for full membership preferred)
  • Proven success in project management and service delivery gained while working in a consultancy environment on development projects
  • Experience managing the input of others to meet deadlines and delivery, good quality outputs within budgets
  • Ability to produce clear, concise and well-written reports
  • Ability to prioritise and manage workload, work to deadlines and prioritise competing requirements
  • Strong communication skills and able to work as part of a team as well as independently
  • Experience of liaising and negotiating with clients, local authorities and stakeholders and in developing good working relationships
  • Valid UK Driving Licence

Desirable

  • Tree Climbing and Aerial Rescue Qualification
  • Proficiency in Phase 1 habitat survey
  • Other protected species licences
  • Track record of providing ecology input to EIA and/or HRA processes
  • Working knowledge of biodiversity net gain and the Defra metric 2.0
  • Chartered Environmentalist or Chartered Ecologist status
  • Higher-level degree or doctorate in ecology
