Description

The Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH) is a world-class research organisation focusing on land and freshwater ecosystems and their interaction with the atmosphere. CEH is part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) the leading funder of independent research, training and innovation in environmental science in the UK.

We are looking for an exceptionally talented leader in hydrological modelling science to drive a major new programme in land surface hydrology Up to c. £70K per annum based in Wallingford, Oxfordshire

Are you a motivated leader with a significant national and international academic reputation in hydrological or land surface modelling? We are seeking a dynamic and inspirational scientist to lead the delivery of the next generation, high resolution physically based land surface and hydrological models for the UK.

This 5-year, £6m programme, Hydro-JULES, will start in April 2018 and is supported by NERC National Capability funding to CEH, the British Geological Survey and the National Centre for Atmospheric Science. This ambitious programme will create an open access and fully coupled community modelling framework linked to and in collaboration with the Joint UK Land Environment Simulator (JULES). A primary objective of Hydro-JULES will be to generate a complete state-of-the-art model of the terrestrial water cycle.

To deliver this capability for the community Hydro-JULES will be undertaken in collaboration with a number of other national and international organisations, universities and institutes. Key partners include the University of Reading and the UK Met Office. The successful candidate will be considered for a visiting Professorial position at the University of Reading.

The individual: proven expertise in hydrological model development and an established national and international reputation in the fields of hydrology and numerical modelling is needed. Excellent leadership, management and communication skills will ensure the successful applicant has the capability to direct a team of up to 10 staff, produce high-impact outputs, and attract significant research funding. Active participation in the scientific development of the JULES community modelling system is a key part of the role.

This is a major leadership role in CEH and to reflect the importance of the position we expect to appoint at a salary of up to c. £70K per annum. Under exceptional circumstances this position could be considered as a 3-5 year secondment. To discuss this role further please contact Professor Mark J Bailey (mbailey@ceh.ac.uk), Director CEH.
