We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed laboratory manager and analyst to work with and manage a small analytical team based at our Bangor site. The post additionally includes the role of local Health and Safety Advisor.

In this role you will:

  • manage the analytical laboratory facilities at Bangor, including some equipment maintenance and troubleshooting if/when required
  • take responsibility for all aspects of laboratory QA to ensure all analytical results are compliant with Quality Assurance protocols and proficiency schemes (e.g. JCOP, LGC AquaCheck) and assist with and co-operate in laboratory audits
  • carry out routine analysis of environmental samples (waters, soils, vegetation, gases)
  • manage two laboratory analysts and assist in the supervision and training of PhD students using the laboratory facilities
  • work with scientific researchers on the development of new methods if/when required
  • manage the local COSHH database of chemicals
  • undertake the role of local H&S Adviser for the CEH Bangor site.

About you

You will be expected to have a relevant degree and PhD in a relevant subject (chemistry or environmental science, biology, earth sciences but with a focus on chemistry) or equivalent experience, plus good technical skills for instrumentation.  Knowledge and experience in using one or more of the following is essential: gas chromatography and ion chromatography, acid-based titimetry, automated colorimetric methods (e.g. discrete analyser), elemental analysers (e.g. high temperature thermal oxidation for total carbon and nitrogen).  A proven track record in laboratory analysis, laboratory management and quality assurance is essential.  An aptitude for method development and trouble-shooting would be a distinct advantage. Experience of working in environmental research would be desirable.

For the Health and Safety role a working knowledge of COSHH is essential.  It would be desirable for you to have a NEBOSH certificate (or to be part qualified) but if this is not the case you must have the aptitude and willingness to undergo appropriate health and safety training (e.g. a NEBOSH Certificate) to be able to carry out this role.

You will be expected to have experience of managing a small team and must have good communication skills.  You will be required to have the ability to work on your own and in collaboration with scientists and non-scientists, so will need a flexible attitude, the ability to meet deadlines and have sound team-working skills.
