Description

Are you an experienced field ecologist? We have several vacancies within the Community and Restoration Ecology group to work with a team of scientists monitoring mobile species on farmland with varying uptake of agri-environment schemes. This high-profile monitoring project is funded by Natural England, and conducted by CEH in collaboration with the British Trust for Ornithology. The role of these posts is to undertake monitor mobile species at various locations across England with associated deployment of field equipment and responsibility for landowner liaison. The posts will start with a training course at CEH Wallingford.

Main Duties

  • Follow scientific protocols for the accurate recording of bumblebee, butterflies and higher plant species, and associated habitat data.
  • Deployment of field equipment (e.g. pan traps and moth light traps), including equipment maintenance and effective storage of invertebrate samples.
  • Accurate and reliable data input using Access databases and ArcGIS mapping tools.
  • Liaison and communication with landowners.
  • Plan and take responsibility for conducting field surveys within small teams.

Essential Skills Required

  • Proven experience of identifying butterflies and foraging bumblebees, and/or higher plants, to species level in the field.
  • Extensive experience of working as a field surveyor.
  • The posts will involve significant outdoor work in all weathers and remote locations, and at unsociable hours for collecting moth traps. Successful candidates must be able to carry field equipment in rugged terrain, and willing to work flexible hours.
  • Highly practical with strong team working skills.
  • Excellent communication skills as frequent contact with landowners and the project team at CEH Wallingford will be necessary.
  • Competent driving skills are essential, including a clean driving license.
  • You must be able to work anywhere in England, and to stay away from home for extended periods living in temporary accommodation, as needed for the field survey.

The posts require proven ability to identify bumblebee and butterfly species, or higher plant species, at an advanced level. The interview will include a test designed to assess this.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience of national butterfly, bumblebee and plant recording schemes.
  • Experience of botanical survey techniques and habitat mapping.
  • Experience of using Access databases and ArcGIS mapping software.
  • Off-road driving experience and/or training.
  • Experience of using ruggedized tablets for field data recording.
