 The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

UNEP’s Division of Technology, Industry and Economics (DTIE) works with international governmental and non-governmental organizations, national and local governments, business and industry to develop and implement policies, strategies and practices that are cleaner and safer, incorporate environmental costs, use natural resources efficiently, reduce pollution and risks for humans and the environment, and enable the implementation of conventions and international agreements. The Environment and Tourism Program is operating within the Sustainable Consumption and Production branch of DTIE. Its mission is to mainstream sustainability into tourism development by demonstrating the economic, environmental, and socio-cultural benefits of sustainable tourism.

This internship is located in the Division of Technology, Industry and Economics (DTIE) of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), based in Paris, France.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the supervision of the Tourism Programme Officer, in the Sustainable Consumption and Production Branch, the intern will:

? Assist in the research of relevant technical information for different projects, such as the Global Partnership for Sustainable Tourism, The Green Passport, and other ongoing or potential projects to be developed within the Tourism and Environment Programme.

? Assist in drafting various texts and power point presentations, as well as in developing communications and background papers in English and French.

? Support the establishment of the recently launched Global Partnership for Sustainable Tourism, supporting the communication, the management of the database and fundraising actions. 

? Assist in identifying political strategies in tourism and environment of regional centers and ministries worldwide and in drafting letters to approach them. 

? The intern will be responsible for undertaking a study on regional centers (MERCOSUR, European Commission) and their activities related to sustainable tourism.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or PhD) in environmental or political sciences, economics, management, communication, sustainable development, or related area. Knowledge of tourism will be considered.

Languages: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship, fluency in oral and written English and French would be an asset.

 

Other Desirable Skills:

? Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office, email, internet) are required. Ability to manage Access databases will be considered in the selection process.

? Good understanding of tourism and environment issues, and development cooperation are an asset. 

? Works collaboratively with other project team members to achieve project goals; willing to learn from others, and able to work in multi-cultural environment.

 

LEARNING COMPONENT:

 This internship will allow the intern to enhance his/her management skills allowing him/her a more systematic approach to present summarized information, work with different priorities and in multi-cultural teams, follow deadlines, refine working language in different types of documents (brochures, websites, e-mails, reports, etc.). This internship will also enhance the intern’s technical competence in tourism and environmental management issues and his/her understanding of economics and political strategies.

 ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

 The Applicant MUST:

 1. Be currently enrolled in a graduate (Masters) or post-graduate (Ph D) programme, and will continue to be enrolled during the period of the internship and after. (NB: applicants pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages should have completed at least three years of university studies)

 2. Be willing to intern on a full-time basis spending five days a week for a period of not less than FOUR MONTHS and not exceeding SIX MONTHS.

General Information and Conditions Governing Internships at the United Nations Environment Programme in Paris.

1.Interns are paid 100€ per month to cover partially the transportation and food costs. The acquisition of necessary visas, travel costs and arrangements, accommodations, are the responsibility of the intern.

 2.UNEP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during an internship. The intern must therefore have health-insurance coverage.

 3.While working at UNEP, interns are not considered in any respect as officials or staff members of the United Nations. However, interns are normally expected to work full time like regular staff members and to carry out the duties assigned to them. Interns are bound by the same duties and obligations as regular staff members. In particular, they must keep confidential any and all unpublished information obtained by them during the course of the internship and not publish any reports or papers on the basis of such information except with the express authorization of the United Nations. Any work produced by interns during their internship within the framework of the duties assigned to them should be used for academic purposes exclusively. All economic and moral rights (copyright) pertaining to such work will remain the exclusive property of the United Nations.

 4.Internships carry no expectation of employment by the United Nations and the intern is not eligible to apply for or to be appointed to any position with the United Nations during the period of internship and for the six months immediately following the expiration of the internship.

 5.The intern will provide notice in case of illness or other unavoidable circumstances, which might prevent him or her from completing the internship.
