About the role:

Horsham District Council is looking for a Sustainability Manager to lead a small busy team with big ambitions. Reporting to the Head of Sustainability and Green Spaces you will be leading the work to implement, review, and update the Councils internal carbon reduction programme and the Climate Action Strategy for the district.

The Sustainability team sits within a recently formed department which includes Parks and Countryside. This new department has been formed to strengthen the delivery of the Council's aspirations on climate action and nature recovery.

As Sustainability Manager you will take a proactive approach to developing strong relationships, both within the Council and with external organisations, as well as the wider community. You will oversee initiatives run by the team which underpin the climate action work, such running a Community Climate Fund, a Parish and Neighbourhood Climate Action Network, and a behaviour change campaign. A focus of this role will be to establish and run a retrofit programme for the district which will involve working with the Councils across West Sussex, as well as other partners.

About you:

To succeed as the Sustainability Manager you will have extensive professional and technical knowledge of environmental issues and experience of implementing climate action programmes and projects. You will be able to develop constructive and productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, as partnership working is vital to progressing climate action. You will have some experience, or knowledge, of line managing, have excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex issues to non-technical audiences, and operating effectively with Councillors.

Given the high workload and ambition of the Council on climate action, you will have a systematic approach to your work, with a proven ability to prioritise and meet deadlines, whilst producing high quality work, as well as problem solving. You should have project management experience and be able to communicate effectively with colleagues and be an excellent team player.

For an informal discussion about this role please call Helen Peacock, Head of Sustainability and Greenspaces on 01403 215513.
