Description

Here at the Ramblers we’re passionate about helping everyone everywhere find their feet, connecting people and protecting the spaces we all love to walk.  Join Britain’s biggest walking charity to help more people enjoy the benefits of walking!

  • The Ramblers is entering an exciting time of change - and the new Membership and Fundraising team is at the centre of the action!  At the heart of the Ramblers lies our wonderful community of 105,000 members, enabling us to fulfil our mission across the length and breadth of Great Britain.  We have an incredibly loyal base of members, but we cannot afford to stand still.  If we are to thrive, grow and remain relevant in a changing landscape, we need to evolve and connect with more of the UK’s 9 million walkers.  Are you up for the challenge?!
  • We are looking for a highly skilled Head of Membership.  This is a senior role within the new Membership and Fundraising team, reporting to the Director of Membership and Fundraising. You will be expected to lead from the front, during a time of organisational change, to enable the Ramblers to sustainably grow our membership population and associated income.  By understanding the needs, wants and behaviours of new and existing audiences, you’ll help the Ramblers grow our reach and relevance, evolving the membership proposition to reach more of the UK’s 9 million walkers.
  • This role will lead the development of a strong coalition of membership advocates across the volunteer and staff team, to build a new approach to attracting, retaining and engaging members and supporters.  You’ll reshape the Ramblers membership team, build foundations for growth across services, member engagement and new member acquisition.  You will bring essential leadership across the many work streams that feed into a successful membership function, working closely with the director to craft and embed a new membership strategy that delivers a significant and vital core income for the Ramblers.
  • You will work closely and collaboratively with the new Head of Fundraising and Head of Engagement to build a strong case for support, and an integrated single supporter view to grow the Ramblers reach, relevance and impact. You will be a key stakeholder in the Data & Digital Transformation programme, using evidence-based insights to inform strategy.

This is an exciting time to join the Ramblers team and a great opportunity to make a lasting and tangible impact on the future success of the charity.  If you think you’ve got what it takes to be our new Head of Membership, we’d love to hear from you.

Essential Requirements include:

  • A proven track record (more than 5 years’ experience) in leading membership development and delivery in a similar membership landscape.
  • Development and ongoing evolution of a membership proposition, to attract and retain new audiences
  • Significant experience in team leadership, performance management and professional development to maximise team wellbeing and effectiveness.
  • Experience in driving effective, lasting change, bringing others with you.
  • A team player, able to develop collaborative, strong and effective working relationships.
  • Ability to negotiate and influence effectively, with strong written and verbal communication skills, to influence a range of audiences and stakeholders including external partners and suppliers.
  • Proven ability to build and implement robust business cases and financial budgets to deliver a healthy return on investment.
  • Proven experience in analysing complex data, to inform strategic decisions.
  • Experience in developing robust performance indicators, measures and reporting frameworks.
  • Project management experience: resulting in high impact and enduring value creation.
  • Experience in building integrated supporter journeys, using targeted multi-channel marketing strategies to drive growth (acquisition) and engagement (retention) with a strong ROI.
  • Experience in influencing volunteers and membership champions in a multi-site context to deliver face-to-face membership recruitment.
  • Experience in developing and coaching exceptional supporter services teams.
  • Experience of strategic development of customer relationship management platforms.
  • Digitally savvy, an early adopter of new technologies and a competence user of MS office, social media and data analytics tools
  • Innovative and solutions-focussed, with the ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
  • Experience in navigating and complying with the regulatory landscape for membership.

The Ramblers are an equal opportunities employer.  We warmly welcome applications from appropriately qualified people from all sections of the community and aim to promote diversity.
