Orbit is a fantastic business and one that’s really going places.

Moving into a new 5 year strategy period, Orbit has made a significant commitment to tackling the climate and ecological emergency.  To do this we are looking to further develop our capacity within the organisation and take the necessary and immediate action required.

Each year we build many new affordable homes and manage a total portfolio of around 45,000 properties; providing a range of maintenance and support services that help enrich the lives of our customers.

Reporting into the Director for Communities and Sustainability, we are currently looking for an innovative self-starter to develop and lead our environmental strategy, as part of our wider ESG commitments.

You will be experienced and have a deep knowledge and passion for promoting sustainability in its broadest sense, environmental initiatives and carbon reductions, ideally across the built environment sector.

You will be responsible for ensuring that our activities meet and exceed existing compliance measures, and that we deliver a sector leading programme.  Specific focus will be to support and transform our supply chain and positively impact over 100,000 customers that live in our properties and the wider communities.  This will come through the implementation of cutting-edge methods, tools and technology, and in securing funding to support the scale required for our ambitions.

As the Head of Environmental Sustainability you will lead the development of the service, lead a strategic team in the delivery of a group wide programme, effectively manage revenue and capital spend and drive effective cross-departmental relationships that influence cultural change and deliver our 2025 strategy ambitions and beyond.

We will gladly consider applications where the applicant lives within an Orbit geography.  These include: Midlands, East Anglia, London and the South East of England.

The package includes a competitive basic salary plus car allowance, group incentive up to 15% of salary, private medical insurance, 27 days holiday plus 9 bank holidays, contributory pension scheme and much more.

About you

We seek a Head of Environmental Sustainability with experience gained in complex and geographically dispersed construction or built environment businesses.  You will have in-depth knowledge of the regulatory/statutory requirements and the best practice in environmental change, ideally with a relevant qualification (IEMA, NEBOSH etc).

You will be commercial astute with a broad business understanding, and the gravitas and presence to engage effectively across senior management teams to support widespread change.  You will understand which KPIs to introduce to the business, and how to monitor and measure its performance against these targets.

You should possess a good balance between strategic and operational focus, able to create the vision, translate this into operational implementation and deliver it through hands-on management, inviting constructive challenge and working closely with management teams across the business.
