Job Title: GIS Data and Evidence Officer

Purpose: To manage the partnership’s GIS data and evidence sharing platform

Reports to: Catchment Science Co-ordinator

Location: Clitheroe

Hours: 15 hours per week over three days (can be fixed or flexible)

Salary: £20,000 - £22,000 pro rata

Contract: 18 month fixed term contract (with possibility of extension)

The Ribble Rivers Trust (RRT) is the lead partner in the Ribble Life Together project, which as a catchment scale project is delivering a range of activities to improve the condition, management and awareness of the Ribble Catchment.  The project brings together over 20 stakeholder and interest groups to develop and deliver a catchment action plan that will bring immediate and lasting benefits for people and the environment.

As part of this project the Trust is looking to recruit a technically competent, dynamic and enthusiastic person to manage the data and evidence of the project.

The project will be guided by the knowledge and experience of the Ribble Life Partnership Board, as well as a range of data and evidence collected by the partners and incorporated into the catchment action plan and GIS modelling outputs.

We are therefore looking for a confident and clear communicator who has good technical skills in environmental data management and analysis using GIS.  We also require applicants who have a good understanding of data quality principles and who are familiar with metadata and data supply issues such as Intellectual Property Rights and Freedom of Information.  The successful candidates are also likely to have some experience of issues such as landscape-scale conservation, ecosystem services, catchment management, river restoration and the Water Framework Directive.

The project officer will be responsible for the day to day running of the project and the duties will include:

  • Collating, analysing and presenting the data and evidence of the Ribble Life Together project
  • Contributing to the project activities including the production of maps, modelling outputs, reports and presentations
  • Providing technical support and training to the partnership in the use of GIS data and evidence
  • Management of data and software licences
  • Contributing to the production of publicity and marketing media of the project
  • Any other duties as required by the RRT.

The post holder will be based principally within RRT offices in Clitheroe, but will be expected to work across the catchment and within a variety of partners’ offices and premises.  The post will report to the Catchment Science Co-ordinator.

Person Description;

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate that they are exceptionally self-motivated and are passionate about managing and improving the environment and particularly through the use of data and evidence.  They must also be a good communicator with a strong background in environmental data management.  A good knowledge of the Ribble Catchment and the functioning of river catchments will also be beneficial.

Essential;

  • Valid driving licence and own car, insured for business use
  • Degree level or equivalent related experience in environment science, preferably aquatic ecology
  • Demonstrable experience of successful project delivery, including managing producing reports
  • GIS trained and high level of experience in its use (preferably ArcGIS)
  • Experience in use of GIS processes, scripts and models
  • Knowledge and experience of managing data licenses
  • Experience in translating complex data into maps and understandable visualisations and presentations
  • Ability to work on the differing tasks identified in the Job Description at the same time
  • Excellent presentation skills and communication skills for a wide range of audiences
  • Possessing good interpersonal skills, both face-to-face and over the phone
  • Reliability, good attendance and work performance
  • Ability to set performance objectives and ensure these are achieved
  • Excellent organisational / admin skills and attention to detail –
  • • Good IT skills / maintaining a filing system
  • • Keeping records of work undertaken
  • • Keeping records of expenses incurred
  • • Awareness of the need for confidentiality.

Desirable;

  • Experience in ecological survey techniques (preferable aquatic)
  • Knowledge of the project area
  • Based near or in the project area.
