Description

This post is part of the People’s Postcode Lottery funded project ‘Saving forests, Changing lives’. The project aims to assess the status of the Tanzanian coastal forests, and to empower policy makers and local communities with knowledge resources to safe-guard forests and improve livelihoods.

The project focuses on the coastal forest of Tanzania. It has four main components: (1) forest surveys with a focus on tree species, (2) local community surveys, (3) awareness raising at local schools and communities, and (4) outreach to policy makers. The first part of the project will focus principally on conducting the surveys, and the second part on awareness raising and policy engagement.

The Project Officer is expected to locally coordinate the project. In addition, he/she will be responsible for undertaking the forest surveys and outreach to policy makers. This will involve several months of fieldwork, regular meetings with stakeholders and the production of a summary report for policy makers. Depending on the interests of the candidate data analysis and scientific paper writing can also be part of the project.

We are looking for candidates with a background in plant/forest surveys and conservation policy. Fieldwork experience and an ability to manage projects and teams are essential, as are good written and oral communication skills. Experience of having worked in sub-Saharan Africa, ideally in Tanzania, is highly desirable. An ability to manage biodiversity inventory datasets will also be needed. A PhD or equivalent experience in biodiversity science is desirable but not essential.

The post will be based at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh but the Project Officer will spend at least 6 months in Tanzania.
