Description  

Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) is an agency of the Scottish Government. We’re looking for enthusiastic, practical, creative people to join the South Region planning team to help shape the future of Scotland’s forests and land.

Our South Region is one of five within FLS and covers some of the most beautiful scenery including the Isle of Arran, Galloway and Ae Forests. We produce approximately 1 million cubic metres of conifer timber annually with a correspondingly large restock programme, roading programme and an increasing thinning programme.

South Region is also a focus for recreation provided via formal walking trails, mountain bike routes and visitor centres as well as being a focus for wind energy.

As an FLS Planner you’ll prepare plans to help us look after the national forests and land to contribute to Scotland’s environment, people and economy. As an FLS Work Programme Coordinator, you will develop year-on-year work programmes that put these plans into action.

A Planner’s main role is to prepare Land Management Plans. This is a facilitation role, which requires you to work with others. You will be keen to explore the consequences of management options, provide practical solutions and think long term.

A Work Programme Manager prepares and coordinates a diverse range of work streams that implement the Land Management Plans. This role combines leadership with logistical skills. The role requires you to juggle the sequence and scale of a range of work across a large geographic area.

Both roles will appeal to people who are happy to get out and about to gain first-hand knowledge of the land and management issues. The planning teams work with others, encourage lateral thinking and problem solving, and aim to make the most of the opportunities that the land has to offer.

The key responsibilities for the role will include:

  • Prepare Land Management Plans (LMPs) or Work Programmes based on a thorough understanding of the land and analysing environmental, silvicultural, financial and social impacts, as well as FLS resources and commitments.
  • Undertake site visits and collaborate with colleagues to explore land management and implementation options, identify silvicultural requirements, creatively address key problems identified and develop efficient and practical solutions to meeting land management objectives.
  • Work Programme Coordinators compile programmes for felling, thinning, restocking, roading, new planting, silvicultural, habitat management and visitor site management, preparing the detailed “work plans” from implementation to completion.
  • Forest Planners prepare screening information for Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) determination, full EIAs, and amendments to plans for regulatory approval.
  • Use GIS to prepare land management plans and spatial programmes.
  • Support the GIS Technician to maintain the local Geographic Information System (GIS) system and its data, e.g. forest inventory data held within the sub-compartment database.
  • Support the Survey technician and survey teams, preparing and managing a coordinated programme of forest surveys and liaise with the relevant staff to manage these threats.
  • Be involved in regional planning initiatives addressing key priorities and developing the wider regional team’s role in planning.
