The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is the newly merged ministry made up of the former Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, NZ Food Safety Authority and Ministry of Fisheries.

The Ministry is recruiting for fishery surveillance officers in thefollowing regions- Auckland and Gisborne. We are seeking individuals who are self-motivated, confident and disciplined people to join the Ministry's Field Operations teams.

You will work as part of a team which is responsible for obtaining compliance in the recreational, commercial, and customary fisheries by administering and enforcing the Fisheries Act and Regulations. 

The primary objectives for these positions are to both promote voluntary compliance with fisheries laws and creating an effective deterrent against illegal activity. Developing and maintaining relationships with tangata whenua and stakeholders groups who use the fisheries resource is also an important aspect of these roles.

The Position Description outlines the skills and competencies required but, as a minimum, you will: 

  • Have highly developed written and oral communication skills 
  • Display high levels of self-motivation and initiative, working effectively in a team environment 
  • Demonstrate an ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines 
  • Have a track record of achievement 
  • Be physically fit and have the ability to work long hours, sometimes under adverse conditions 
  • Have an understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi and the Fisheries Settlement Act 
  • Have NCEA Level 2 (English and Maths) or equivalent 
  • Have a passion for the role.


Candidates must have the aptitude and presence to work in an enforcement oriented organisation.
