About the Role

As one of the world’s leading engineering, professional services and technical consultancy firms, at WSP, we’re passionate about the big questions. And big answers, naturally. For us that’s all about reaching beyond the expected to do work that’ll make a profound impact felt long into the future.

Our Environmental team in the UK is growing and we have an exciting senior position available in our ecology team to develop our capacity in environmental economics, working closely with our biodiversity and natural capital specialists. We are looking for someone who is well established as an environmental economist in the UK and who has experience using a range of environment economics tools and approaches. The successful candidate would preferably be located in Cambridge, London, Manchester, Bristol, Birmingham or Glasgow, although other locations will be considered. The role provides an exciting opportunity to bring innovative solutions to a range of projects, working with both public and private sector clients. The role will focus primarily on UK projects but with potential to engage in our international work.

This is a new role at WSP to contribute towards continued growth and investment in our environmental capabilities. You will be joining a small team of experts in biodiversity and natural capital, delivering technical input across a range of projects for both internal and external clients. As such, you will also be working closely with colleagues within the environmental discipline and wider disciplines across WSP.

A typical week would include:

  • Undertaking a range of environmental economics work at WSP, supporting the Natural Capital Technical Lead to embed natural capital concepts across projects to support decision-making
  • Application of economics tools (for example: cost-benefit analysis, natural capital accounting) and contributing to the development of new tools and approaches
  • Providing specialist environmental economics input to fee bids and proposals and deliver environmental economics outputs for projects.
  • As a recognised expert in this field, you will develop close contact with key clients for WSP as well as establishing connections with new clients, supporting them to use economics to better understand how the environment is a material issue for business and society more broadly
  • Representing WSP through general business development activities as appropriate.

About You

We'd love to hear from you if you have:

  • A postgraduate degree (MSc or PhD) in economics, development studies or related discipline.
  • Significant experience in relevant area, with a demonstrated track record of applying economics to matters of environmental policy research and analysis either in consultancy, business or the public sector.
  • In depth knowledge of environmental economics, sustainable development issues and the interface between socio-economics and the environment.
  • Experience using a range of environmental economics tools and techniques including corporate natural capital accounting.
  • Experience in collecting, managing, analysing and presenting qualitative and quantitative data related to environmental economics.
  • A solid understanding of ecological concepts including comprehensive knowledge of the ecosystem services approach and natural capital assessments.
  • The ability to apply technical excellence in a commercially astute manner.
  • Excellent research, analytical, writing and presentational skills.
  • Good project development and implementation skills.
  • Self-starter and capable of setting and achieving own targets, especially as part of cross-disciplinary teams.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with colleagues and with external stakeholders.
  • Preparation of proposals and proven work winning skills.
  • A willingness to travel to meet clients and other WSP staff across the UK.
  • Strong contacts within the UK, effective communicator and a good reputation amongst peers.
  • A full UK driving licence and eligibility to work in the UK.
