We are seeking a suitable applicant to work on low-cost atmospheric monitoring projects and laboratory management. Research at local and national scales of rural pollutants is undertaken by CEH at its Edinburgh and Lancaster sites including chemical species such as ammonia, acid gases (SO2, HCl) and particulate matter. The successful candidate will work in the teams undertaking high quality research within both small and large scale projects, (including the Defra UK National Ammonia Monitoring Network). At Edinburgh, experiment planning, logistics and data management of a large number of field sites in a number of projects is undertaken. Short term research-focussed chemical analysis is performed by staff and students at Edinburgh while large and long term projects have sample analysis undertaken at the CEH Lancaster central laboratory with coordination from the Edinburgh group. Our aim to deliver timely quality controlled data and maintain effective communications with the site operator groups, customers and stakeholders.

Skills Required

  • Candidates will be expected to have a degree in Chemistry or applied Environmental Sciences and some project based experience of quantitative scientific work in a university or research environment.
  • Ideally you will have an aptitude and interest in environmental science.
  • A clear understanding of laboratory procedures and QA/QC methods are required including an understanding of analytical chemistry.
  • A full clean driving license is essential and the capability to work outdoors in remote areas in UK conditions.
