As Kent Wildlife Trust strive to deliver a Wilder Kent https://www.kentwildlifetrust.org.uk/wilder-kent the need for robust ecological data is essential in evidencing our conservation decisions and to influence the decisions of others which have the potential to affect the natural environment. At a time when conservation thinking is changing, Kent Wildlife Trust is establishing new ideas and concepts around less prescriptive and intensive management of ecosystems and component habitats, leading to more ecological systems based approaches, focussed on the restoration of natural processes to tackle a range of natural, societal and economic challenges. These approaches are most visible in the re-wilding movement, advocating more extensive management of broad mosaics of habitats at a landscape scale, underpinned by the reintroduction of keystone, analogue and flagship species such as beaver, bison, chough and pine marten.
The Wilding Evidence Ecologist will work alongside the existing Wilding Ecologists to deliver programmes of monitoring to evidence ecological outcomes, proof of concept and feasibility across the Trusts wilding ambition. In the first instance the focus of this role will be on our Wilder Blean project; we plan to introduce large grazing herbivores (bison, long-horn cattle, and iron-age pigs) into an extensive woodland system. The initial focus of this role will be to lead the delivery of the Wilder Blean monitoring programme to assess the impact of our wilding approach on habitat structure and vegetation dynamics, biodiversity and bioabundance, natural processes, ecosystem services and natural capital.

The successful candidate will possess the skills to lead and develop a varied range of monitoring projects across a range of taxa, habitats and systems.
