Description

Are you interested in exposing obstacles to climate action? Want to play a crucial leadership role in a dynamic and growing organisation holding the powerful to account on their environmental promises? DeSmog is looking for an Editor (UK) to lead our rapidly growing team.

The Editor (UK) will be responsible for overseeing the activities of DeSmog’s UK team, developing and leading its reporting agenda and organisational strategy.

About DeSmog

DeSmog is a global investigations outlet that has provided accurate, fact-based reporting on misinformation campaigns and corporate lobbying worldwide for over 15 years. DeSmog continues to expand our focus to areas where misinformation has eroded public understanding and political action to address critical societal challenges, such as meeting the world’s energy needs, confronting environmental racism, and ensuring a just transition to a sustainable economic paradigm.

DeSmog’s work has become a crucial resource for anyone with an interest in the undue influence of climate science denial and the erosion of democracy and the public debate by polluter interests. We regularly work with mainstream media partners including the Guardian, Independent, and Channel 4. Our work has been used by MPs to challenge government decisions, and in the US Senate in Congressional hearings on climate change and energy issues.

DeSmog has recently undergone a phase of rapid growth, and we are looking for someone to lead our team of award-winning journalists and researchers. The Editor (UK) will lead the UK team while working closely with DeSmog’s North America and global editorial staff, led by Executive Director Brendan DeMelle.

The ideal candidate will have experience of managing small teams in a non-profit or media setting, will be eager to lead a team of enthusiastic and committed individuals to increase DeSmog’s impact and continue to grow its reputation in the field of environmental investigations, and will be passionate about making a positive difference in holding powerful corporate and political interests to account to help the world tackle climate change.

Role and responsibilities

  • Developing and leading the UK team’s investigative reporting strategy;
  • Working closely with the global team to drive DeSmog’s international reporting efforts;
  • Managing all UK-based research and journalism staff, including the 6 core staff and up to a dozen freelancers and contractors;
  • Representing the UK team to external partners (including media);
  • Developing and leading the UK team’s growth strategy;
  • Leading fundraising efforts for the UK and European projects, to enable DeSmog’s work to grow and continue to reach wider audiences;
  • Overseeing the UK company and reporting to its Board of Directors;
  • Championing an open and diverse team culture, focused on delivering high-quality and impactful output.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will have:

  • At least 5 years of experience working as a journalist, campaigner, or researcher in a relevant field;
  • At least 2 years management experience;
  • A proven track record of delivering impactful public-facing projects on climate change (or a related area);
  • Proven fundraising experience and experience of managing project budgets, with an awareness of risk management;
  • The drive to maximise the organisation’s potential, after a period of rapid scaling;
  • The ability to juggle competing tasks in a fast-paced environment, and the skills to be a dynamic multi-tasker;
  • An established contact book, with the ability to network with and influence a range of stakeholders at all levels;
  • The enthusiasm to be a passionate communicator who is excited about having a big impact in a small organisation;
  • A commitment to promoting diversity in the workplace.

Application process

DeSmog aims to appoint the most qualified candidate at all times and welcomes applications from people from all different backgrounds. We value diversity and particularly encourage applications from black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) candidates.

To apply for the role, please send a CV and a one-page cover letter explaining why you are a good fit for the role that also states your potential start date to editor@desmog.uk
