Place Services is at the forefront of environmental consultancy in the public sector, and our people are integral to our success. The growth of our commercial practice means we are now looking for a resourceful, confident and professional ecologist to join our growing multidisciplinary team.  Reporting to the Principal Ecological Consultant and working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the post holder will deliver a range of client focused ecology and biodiversity services, to support the commercial viability of Place Services.

Key areas of work will be the provision of ecological advice to Local Planning Authority officers in relation to planning, for Essex County Council and for our District and Borough partners. In addition, you will carry out habitat surveys and field surveys for legally protected species such as Badger, Dormouse, Water Vole, bats and Great Crested Newt. This will include some early morning or late evenings.

You will also be expected to contribute to a wide range of client focused ecology and biodiversity services, to support the commercial viability of Place Services.

Role specific accountabilities

• Deliver ecology and biodiversity services, working in multi-disciplinary teams.
• Work alongside the Principal Ecological Consultant and Senior Ecological Consultant to ensure effective contract management to time, budget and specification.
• Establish and maintain good working relationships with internal and external customers to help ensure successful business outcomes.
• Identify opportunities that deliver profitable services, and make suggestions to improve quality service.
• Help create a positive team culture by providing support and ideas to encourage joined up and effective working.
• Actively keep updated within your specialism to contribute to profitable opportunities.
• Actively develop commercial acumen and constantly strives to build on skills to strengthen the position of the business.
• Continually look for ways to improve your own performance by seeking feedback from customers, peers and managers

Knowledge, Skills and Experience


• Educated to degree level or equivalent in ecology/biodiversity or related discipline, with a minimum of one year’s industry experience.
• Associate CIEEM membership, or eligible to apply.
• Has and maintains significant knowledge of legislation and planning policy and good practice relating to ecology and biodiversity.
• Has and maintains significant knowledge and experience of field survey techniques for legally protected species such as Great Crested Newt, bats, Dormouse, Water Vole and/or Badger.
• Evidence of continuous professional development.
• Able to prioritise work whilst maintaining focus on key projects or activities, within defined timescales.
• Understands basic project management methodologies.
• Has a good and developing understanding of commercial practices.
• Experience of dealing effectively with clients even when faced with difficult situations.
• Experience of having to proactively deal with difficult situations with little supervision.
