Description

MCS has ambitious aims – our vision is to secure seas that are fit for life.  We seek to make political and social changes that will result in healthy fish stocks and clean seas and beaches – we work for oceans that provide sustainable livelihoods for those that rely on them, and wonderful habitats and environments for us all to enjoy.

We are looking for an exceptional individual to join our Senior Management Team as a Director, a thought-leader in their field who will strengthen MCS’ influential position and lead our conservation programmes and campaigns.

We have a dynamic team making an outstanding contribution to marine conservation in the UK and this an ideal opportunity for a highly motivated individual to define and lead MCS’ conservation strategy, and to implement these plans with the conservation and wider teams through our programmes and campaigns.

MCS campaign achievements include the introduction of UK and Scotland Marine Acts to better protect our seas, influencing sustainable seafood choices through the Good Fish Guide, involving thousands of volunteers in Beachwatch litter surveys to tackle pollution at source, leading the campaign for an ecologically coherent and well-managed network of marine protected areas, and securing effective management for European Marine Sites.

You will need a broad knowledge of the current and future challenges facing the marine environment, and be able to bring innovative-thinking and delivery mechanisms to create successful outcome-based conservation projects.  You will have experience of supporting projects to develop them from small-scale into outcomes with significant impact, as well as the leadership skills to work with skilled individuals to grow these projects.  You will be supported by a passionate and dedicated team who will benefit from your leadership and ability to effectively manage and motivate geographically dispersed teams.

A skilled communicator, you will need to be able to initiate and maintain positive relationships with key stakeholders in government, industry, public and voluntary sectors and have a personal style which will promote public and stakeholder engagement to achieve MCS’ conservation goals.

In this senior management role, you will contribute to the delivery of communications and fundraising strategies, in particular in sourcing funds for development of our conservation programmes, and input to the wider organisational development of MCS as a whole.
