This is a part-time post of 24 hours per week not inclusive of meal breaks.

The Assistant Conservation Groups and Sanctuary Officer (Job-Share) is part of a small team within DIO Technical Services that is responsible for:

- Compiling, designing and publishing Sanctuary, the MOD’s annual sustainability magazine
- Co-ordinating the MOD’s annual Sanctuary Awards including the judging process and high-profile presentation event
- Co-ordinating and supporting the MOD’s Conservation Groups, including publication of the Conservation Update newsletter
- Developing and supporting environmental awareness and communication campaigns and activities
- Subject to capacity, supporting environmental casework on the Defence estate.

Sanctuary Magazine is a high quality, annual publication that has been produced for over 40 years, gaining an outstanding reputation with both internal and external stakeholders alike. It is the MOD’s key mechanism to publicise sustainability initiatives and activities and highlights ongoing partnerships with contractors, regulators, tenants and NGOs.

The annual Sanctuary Awards recognise and reward success in sustainability, environmental protection and heritage, including sustainable business and individual contribution awards.

Main Responsibilities

Leadership and Management

Manage and prioritise a busy workload. Understand how your work contributes to DIO’s aims and objectives and supports defence activities. Plan and undertake appropriate personal development to ensure core competences and specialist skills are kept up to date. Promote strong working relationships both within the DIO Ecology Team and with other teams across DIO and MOD.

Sanctuary Magazine

• Support project management of the annual Sanctuary magazine from inception to delivery.

• Advertise for articles and images, support the Editorial Board to determine magazine content.

• Source Sanctuary sponsorship from industry partners and oversee the collection process of funds.

• Commission articles and work closely with authors to establish article message and content.

Sanctuary Awards

• Advertise for Sanctuary Award nominations to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

• Collate all award nominations and facilitate judging via external software tool.

• Facilitate the Sanctuary Awards judging panel to obtain the results of each category.

MOD Conservation Groups

• Provide advice and guidance on issues such as membership and management, survey data management, access and insurance for volunteer activities, support MOD Bird Ringing Permits.

• Maintain a tracker to monitor groups, activities and ES&C attendance, help to reinvigorate existing groups and explore opportunities to establish new groups

• Compile and distribute a ‘Conservation Update’ newsletter periodically, suggesting potential initiatives and activities with Conservation Group chairs and members, as well as a wider readership of MOD environmental professionals.
