We are pleased to be able to offer the chance to experience the wonderful world of water, through the eyes of the Science team. In this requirement, you will be supporting on the delivery of site investigations and identifying and implementing process management improvements for surface water, groundwater, and wastewater. You will also be responsible for wastewater data acquisition and analysis of wastewater data and information for the client at HPC, so they comply with environmental permits.

What will I be doing?

This is an exciting multifunctional role involving both on-site and office work, designed to develop our next generation of expert process management and wastewater scientists by providing opportunities to learn new skills while making a valued contribution to the Science Team. Working in partnership and learning from the Environmental and Regulations Manager and our experienced Science Team, you will be part of a dynamic team providing technical process management and basic troubleshooting support to our Treatment and Dewatering Teams across a variety of activities.

As Development Scientist, you will specialise in wastewater treatment and provide scientific management of wastewater data and information to our Hinkley management team NNB (Nuclear New Build), ensuring 100% compliance with the relevant environmental and regulatory standards.

Your role responsibilities include critically monitoring and analysing wastewater data and producing accurate monthly reports within agreed timescales and standards to satisfy our contractual agreements with the client at HPC and regulatory requirements with the Environment Agency.

As well as submitting reports you will interpret and report compliance and will present wastewater data and findings at weekly meetings.

As part of the development process, you will be responsible for specific tasks for monitoring and managing the performance of various biological and chemical treatment processes, co-ordinating site operational investigations, conducting on-site laboratory testing and creating scientific investigation reports. You will be involved in planning, advising, and implementing measures to improve quality; optimise processes and reduce cost or environmental impact on site. As well as routine tasks, you may need to respond to site environmental incidents and emergencies.

You will report formally to the Scientist but day to day, your work may be directed and supported by the Treatment Manager, Assistant Treatment Manager and Environmental and Regulation Manager. You’ll work closely to agree on work priorities and address instrument or analytical issues.

You will predominantly work at our Hinkley C site, but you may also have to work on other local sites on occasion, so you will need a full clean UK driving licence.

What are the requirements?

To do this job, we expect you to be educated to an undergraduate degree level in an environmental or scientific subject and have an understanding of environmental law and knowledge of wastewater treatment processes.  You will have good IT and data analysis skills covering normal use of Microsoft Office applications in particular Excel. You should be a member or committed to working towards membership of a relevant professional body.  Technical wastewater treatment knowledge and experience, or experience relevant to the water industry, environmental management or chemistry would be beneficial.

We are looking for a self-motivated, enthusiastic individual who enjoys working outdoors and learning new skills. You will have a hands-on, practical, methodical and flexible work approach. You will have excellent problem-solving skills, organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to plan and prioritise work effectively. Most of all, you will be an effective communicator and confident liaising with internal and external stakeholders at any level.

We are a close-knit, supportive team working in a busy site environment so we need someone who will be a team player and can fit in quickly and be able to work both independently and collaboratively.
